Queer
Studies at Tufts
At its best, queer studies
is an interdisciplinary field that combines gender studies, sexuality
studies, and postmodern and performative theories in order to examine,
upset, and oppose ideas and practices of normality, examining in particular
the ways that human identities and experiences tend to be mapped out in
binary and oppositional ways (white/black, male/female,
heterosexual/homosexual, middleclass/poor, etc.) A key focus of queer
studies is the intersectionality of issues of race, ethnicity, nationality,
class, religion, and culture with issues of sexuality and gender.
The Tufts LGBT Center is committed to
the development of Queer Studies at Tufts. Over the last five years, we
have made considerable advancements on this front. Our accomplishments
include (1) creating an LGBTQ-related course list on the LGBT Center’s
website; (2) establishing Introduction to Queer Studies as a permanent, core
course in Women’s Studies; (3) establishing the Queer Studies Scholars
Series, which brings a major queer studies scholar to campus each fall; and
(4) overhauling the LGBT Center’s library (catalog now available online)
with a focus on queer studies texts.
