TEAM Q APPLICATION
Due Thursday, 9-17-09
Applications may be emailed to TuftsTeamQ@hotmail.com, or brought to the LGBT Center, 226 College Ave., Bolles House.
Team Q is an undergraduate speakers’ bureau designed to promote awareness, understanding, and acceptance of LGBT people. Whether you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, or a straight ally, we welcome you to join us in helping to promote dialogue in the Tufts community and beyond.
In a typical Team Q presentation, four students will each spend five minutes telling a personal story related to LGBT issues. In the past, topics have included coming out, struggling to accept oneself as gay, supporting a gay or transgender friend, being confronted by discrimination or intolerance, and being raised by gay parents. After the stories, the audience submits anonymous questions for the panel to answer. This year, Team Q will also attempt to bring new educational programming to the Tufts community, such as Guess the Straight Person, an interactive “gameshow-style” event which premiered at this year’s 2009 Orientation.
We ask that all new members attend a weekend-long training retreat in Provincetown, September 25-27. It is expected that all members will participate in a minimum of two panels each semester.
Please be aware that Team Q is a public forum. We cannot control who is in the audience, and thus we can’t control who knows about your sexual/gender identity. As a member of Team Q, you are a visible member of the queer/ally community as Tufts, as a well as a role model for the entire Tufts community. Past members have found that the rewards of this unique position far outweigh the risks, but you should consider your comfort with being “out” before applying.
