Frequently Asked Questions

How is my application built?

Initially, both you and ITS will meet for an Information Discovery Workshop where we will work together to identify the application scope and desired functionality.  The data gathered from this workshop is then used by ITS to create a project plan/timeline.  Once approved, ITS will begin the development of the application.  Post development, the application enters a period of quality assurance.  Once the stability and functionality of the application have been confirmed, it is deployed into production.

In working with ITS, where will my application be hosted?

Your application will be hosted in the Arts & Sciences production web environment and will appear under your department's web site structure.  This means that after the http:// it will have a URL something like this: ase.tufts.edu/departmentname/application.

What technology will be used to create my application?

While specific technology decisions are custom to each project, most applications will be created using the Microsoft .Net development environment.  The programming language of choice is typically C#.  If your application is database driven, either open source XML data structures (for applications of smaller scope) or Microsoft SQL Server (for applications of larger scope) will be used to support your application.

What is the cost?

Since each application is different, ITS cannot predict the final cost in application design prior to the information discovery workshop. Typical web development/application design costs ranged from $1800 - $2500.  The current hourly rate can be found on the ITS Web Application Development Policy.
