Obtaining Software Used in Research
SPSS (computer must have LanDesk installed)
SPSS is available directly from SPSS or from a reseller,
e-academy.com.
E-academy.com offers 6 month
and 1 year licensing for faculty and staff. SPSS offers both annual
and perpetual licenses as well as many different modules.
OS: Windows and Mac.
How to obtain: Purchase directly from SPSS or
e-academy.com.
Home use: Depends on the license purchased.
Student use: Depends on the license purchased.
Endnote
Every year Tufts does a bulk purchase of Endnote.
The University community is notified via a Postservice email.
The cost varies each year depending on how many licenses are purchased,
but is generally $50-100 per license.
OS: Mac and Windows licenses. Perpetual
license, but does not include free upgrades.
How to obtain: Send IDR for $75 (approximately) per
license to ITS and the software will be installed.
Home use: Permitted but requires a separate license.
Student use: Not permitted.
SAS
Tufts has an SAS license that permits all Tufts computers to have SAS installed -
but it must be in support of teaching and research. The license is annual and
expires 12/31/xx each year.
OS: Windows only. Annual license only.
How to obtain: Contact the
ITS HelpDesk to arrange software installation.
Home use: Permitted. Contact the
ITS HelpDesk to arrange a
time to bring your computer onto campus. Must be a Tufts owned computer.
Student use: The contract allows student use. The computer must
not be a Tufts-owned computer, if used by students. The student must fill out a
form that is kept on file with ITS. ITS will then arrange for installation.
Contact the ITS HelpDesk
to arrange for software installation.
Stata
Faculty, staff or students can purchase Stata at a deeply
discounted price because Tufts is part of what Stata calls a “grad plan”.
ITS maintains an inventory of Stata software and authorizes ITS to
distribute it after a purchase is made.
OS: Windows, Mac and Unix.
License can be annual or perpetual.
How to obtain: Purchase directly from
Stata.com's website.
ITS will email user the license code with instructions to pick up
software. Software can be sent via campus mail, but not via U.S. Mail.
Home use: Permitted but requires a separate license.
Student use: Permitted but requires a separate license.
Matlab
Matlab is available in two ways:
- With a Tufts Research Cluster Account, access Matlab and
some 20+ toolboxes directly from a Tufts server.
Faculty, staff and students may access Matlab only from Tufts owned
computers from on campus locations.
OS: Windows, Mac, and Unix.
How to obtain: Contact ITS to request setup.
Home use: Not permitted. Access is limited to on campus only.
Student use: Permitted, but must be on a Tufts owned computer.
- A stand alone Matlab license can be purchased from ITS and the software
installed. This is the base module only - no additional toolboxes. Toolboxes can be
purchased separately from Mathworks for (approximately) $200 each.
OS: Windows, Mac, and Unix
How to obtain: Send IDR for $180 to ITS and installation
will be arranged. There are a limited number of stand alone Matlab
licenses available at the discounted price. However, users may purchase
directly from Matlab as needed.
Home use: Permitted but requires a separate license.
Student use: Permitted but requires a separate license.
ArcGIS
Faculty, staff or students can obtain ArcGIS at no cost, as
Tufts maintains a site license. ArcGIS is available via access to a Tufts
license server or via a stand alone software installation. ArcGIS can be
installed on either a Tufts owned computer or a personal computer.
OS: Windows.
How to obtain: Faculty/staff - Contact the ITS Helpdesk
and installation can be arranged. Student - Request license from GIS instructor.
