ITS Standards - Data Recovery
For The School of Arts & Sciences, The School of Engineering, and
The Fletcher School
Physical drives and storage devices sometimes fail. In this event, ITS will
take steps to recover needed data. However, the steps ITS can take are limited
as more thorough data recovery techniques require sterile facilities, unique
equipment and expertly trained staff in the field.
ITS is not be responsible for the loss of data, failure of physical hardware
or the recovery of the data. Below is a list of “best practices” to help ensure
minimal data loss.
- Backup your data as often as possible using physical media
and/ or online services*
- Store important data on a Tufts’ network drive, i.e. P:, Q:
- Install virus and spyware software, and maintain updates of
these applications
- Avoid powering off your computer/laptop by holding down the
power button
- Avoid liquid contact to the computer/laptop
- Keep the computer/laptop out of extreme heat and/or cold
- Avoid tampering with the computer/laptop
*Online Backup Companies:
Unfortunately, if data loss should occur, you will need to contact a data
recovery service company. Below is a list of companies that have been reliable
in the past. Please keep in mind, not all data recovery is 100% successful; it
depends on the condition of the physical device itself.
