ITS Privacy Policy
ITS maintains a web server which hosts many sites for departments and student
organizations at Tufts University. This privacy statement only applies to those
sites developed and maintained by ITS for providing the services it offers.
These sites include the ITS departmental pages, the CourseInfo course management
site and the ITS Training site. This statement does not apply to the many
non-ITS sites also hosted on our servers, and ITS is not responsible for the
privacy policies or content therein.
What Information is gathered by ITS, and how is it used?
In general, there are two types of information gathered for the web services
offered by ITS.
The first type is of an automatic and general nature. This information is
automatically generated by the process of requesting web pages, and is passed
between your web browser and any web server. These general types of information
include your domain name, your IP address, and the date and time you visited a
site.
- A Domain Name uniquely identifies a subsection of the web. Examples would be
tufts.edu, microsoft.com, and whitehouse.gov.
- An IP address uniquely identifies your computer on the network. This address is
in no way connected to you personally, but allows a web server to send a
particular document to your particular computer. (It also allows your particular
computer to connect to the Tufts Network).
This general information is written to log files on the server and is only used
for analyzing trends on the visits to our sites. It can, for example, help us to
identify things like which pages are the most popular, and at what time of day
usage is heaviest.
The other type of information ITS gathers is the limited personal information
needed to offer the services we provide. ITS has four main services for which
user information is needed: CourseInfo, Faculty Guide, Training and CenterLink.
- CourseInfo requires information about students and faculty who are entered into
the system
- Faculty Guide displays relevant biographical information
- The ITS Training program maintains a database of basic contact information used
to send course confirmations and provide additional information to those who
participate in ITS Training
- CenterLink allows user login to secured sections of the ITS web site and allows
users to login through FrontPage for editing their department's (or
organization's) site. A user can view and update their own CenterLink account.
Is the information gathered by ITS shared with anyone?
None of this information is used in any way except it's intended purpose, and it
is not shared with any organization outside ITS.
Does ITS use cookies on its web sites?
Cookies are tiny bits of information stored by your web browser. The cookies we
pass to you are only used for the current session, and are deleted by your
browser when you end your session.
How can I contact ITS about your privacy policy?
Any questions can be directed to
the Privacy Mailbox,
which is monitored by ITS staff.
