The Web-based colloquium, INTR 91 in the spring for sophomores
and INTR 92 in the fall for juniors, is a two-course sequence to
prepare students for conducting research on international topics
while studying abroad. The colloquium provides instruction, both
classroom and Web-based, research training, and support for
students to conduct research while abroad, to connect with the
abroad community, and to prepare for substantive research
production in the senior year and beyond.
INTR 91, International Research Colloquium
This course encourages students to approach their study abroad or other international programs as opportunities to conduct quality research that might later form the basis of a senior project, research seminar paper or thesis. We recall and build upon the basic analytical and research skills introduced through the college writing requirement and the introductory / foundation courses in the various disciplines that comprise the International Relations Program. International research poses specific practical, ethical, and cultural challenges. We raise those issues as part of the research process from an initial exploration of a project to the completion of a research prècis.
The course is co-taught by Profs. Richard Eichenberg and Jeanne Marie Penvenne. It is offered as a half credit course on a Pass-Fail basis. Course limit: 50
INTR 92
The second course facilitated by faculty at Tufts, is
offered online to students studying abroad. Bridging the
geographic distance, it uses the Web-based tools of the IRN to
help students fine-tune research skills, develop a research
question, and connect with other faculty in their research areas
to provide in-depth thematic mentoring for when they gather data
and resources abroad. To receive academic credit for the
courses, students are required to complete content-specific
tasks, submit assignments online, and communicate with
classmates and faculty.
This colloquium is for you if you're planning on conducting
research while abroad or intending to write a senior thesis,
Fulbright proposal, directed research project or any other
capstone research project in the future.
