Possible Uses of the Anne E. Borghesani Memorial Prize
The Anne E. Borghesani Prize is designed to help defray the
costs of a project, activity or plan of study in any field
involving international issues. Projects that exemplify the
spirit of the award -- the promotion of personal growth,
knowledge, and independence while increasing the recipient's
understanding of all peoples through encouraging commitment to
the world community -- are particularly welcomed. The Borghesani
Selection Committee wishes to stress that applications from
students in all departments and fields of study are appropriate,
provided that the proposed activity has a strong international
component. The Selection Committee may make one or several
awards, depending on the quantity and quality of submissions.
Thus, applicants should be aware that the award might not cover
the full cost of proposed activities.
The following list provides some illustrations of the purposes
to which the Borghesani Prize might be applied. However, other
activities, projects or plans of study may be proposed, so long
as they meet the guidelines of the prize competition.
- Projects involving international study or experiential
learning. This may involve travel to facilitate research on a
specific topic or to engage in experiential learning abroad.
Research projects have included study in libraries, museums or
other institutions of culture or learning, focusing on the
effects of economic, political, technological or scientific
developments. Experiential learning projects have included
living within a community to gain insight at the local level
into such issues as community health and economic development.
The following are examples of projects that might be proposed.
This list is merely illustrative:
- study of the impact of disease or population increase
on a particular country or region;
- study of the origins or impact of scientific or technological
change in a particular country or region;
- study of social movements in a particular country or region;
- a look at the role of science and technology in the developing
world's approaches to environmental problems;
- involvement with artistic, musical or other cultural forms in
a particular country or region, emphasizing the impact on the
global community.
- Semester or summer language study through an abroad program
(including those run through the Tufts European Center in Talloires,
France), combined with some sort of local volunteer project/activity.
- Structured internships abroad, focusing on such topics as
international health care, nuclear and conventional weapons proliferation,
international trade or finance, management of transnational issues
(e.g., refugees, migration, cultural or artistic exchange), or
environmental, scientific or engineering issues.
