2011-2012 Members
Richard Ammerman, A12,
is a senior double majoring in Economics and International Relations, with a
concentration on Europe and the Former Soviet Union. Born in Rome and raised
between Venice and Hamilton, NY, he speaks fluent Italian and has studied German
and Mandarin. Richard spent his junior year at Pembroke College, Oxford, and is
currently writing his senior thesis on the development of democracy in Italy. He
was treasurer of Hemispheres, the Tufts Journal of International Affairs, and is
also a member of the Tufts Financial Group, Tufts Economics Society, and the
Chamber Music program, where he plays the cello.
Guktae An, A12,
is a senior majoring in International Relations and Economics at Tufts
University. Despite being born in South Korea, he moved to America at a young
age and was able to live in various states across the US. Before entering
college, he devoted a year to a leadership training program to raise the culture
of our youth through numerous service projects and workshops. As a life-long
athlete, his passion lies in culture, politics, and economics, where he hopes to
bring reconciliation and cooperation across the instable Pacific region. He
recently studied abroad at Oxford University and is pursuing academics that will
help him prepare to go to civil service after graduation.
Lauren Bailey, A12,
is a senior at Tufts from Fort Worth, TX. She is currently majoring in
International Relations with a concentration on Europe and the former Soviet
Union and with the intention to add a second major in French upon her return to
Tufts. She was on exchange last year at the Institut des Etudes Politiques in
Paris, France studying European Affairs. She has been involved in Model United
Nations since high school and has participated in various conferences in the
United States as well as Canada and Mexico. Lauren is also a member of the
sorority Alpha Omicron Pi.
Daniel Bleiberg, A13,
is a junior from Los Angeles, California. He is majoring in International
Relations with a concentration in International Security, and minoring in
History. He is studying abroad at Tufts-in-Paris in Spring 2012, and is fluent
in French and Hebrew. At Tufts, Daniel is involved with the organization Tufts
Friends of Israel, of which he has been President of since his sophomore year.
He was selected Tufts Student Leader of the Year at the 2011 Office for Campus
Life Awards. Last summer, he worked as a legal assistant at a worker's
compensation firm in Los Angeles. Upon graduation, he hopes to pursue a formal
law education and a career in diplomacy.
Julie Bloch, A12,
is a senior double majoring in International Relations, with a concentration on
Europe and the former Soviet Union, and French. She was born in Paris, France,
and is an international student here at Tufts University. She spent all of her
junior year abroad in Paris studying European affairs as well as the foundations
of EU law at the Institut des Etudes Politiques (SciencesPo). Julie intends to
write a Senior Honors Thesis for her French major focusing on George Sand’s
controversial novel Lélia. After graduation, she plans to continue her
passion for International Relations by pursuing a degree in International Law.
Julie is a member of the sorority Alpha Omicron Pi and has participated in
various organizations of the Leonard Carmichael Society.
Christine Busaba, A13,
is a junior majoring in Quantitative Economics and International Relations with
a concentration in the Middle East and South Asia. She is fluent in Arabic and
is now studying French with plans to study abroad at Tufts-in-Paris in the
spring of 2012. She is a former health educator for the non-profit organization
Peer Health Exchange and currently serves as the ad manager for the Tufts Daily.
She volunteered in the summer of 2010 at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
in Beirut, Lebanon where she spends almost every summer. She has a particular
passion for Middle Eastern affairs, hoping to eventually move back to her
parent’s native Lebanon to work on economic development projects throughout the
region.
Brittany Chait, A12,
is a senior double majoring in International Relations with a Concentration on
Europe and the Former Soviet Union and French.
She spent her junior year studying abroad in Paris, France with the Tufts
in Paris program. In Paris this past
spring, Brittany interned at the Dow Jones in the marketing department for the
solution Factiva. Brittany enjoys
learning languages and in addition to taking classes for her French major, has
taken classes in Spanish, Russian, and Italian while attending Tufts University.
Madeline Christensen, A12,
is a senior majoring in International Relations, with a focus on ideas,
identity, and ideologies. She is from Shorewood, Minnesota. Madeline is fluent
in French and studying Mandarin Chinese. She is spending this spring semester
studying Chinese culture and ethnic minorities in the Yunnan province of China.
Madeline has participated in the Tufts chorale and African music ensemble. She
also tour guides and has written for several publications on campus, and she
loves going outside with the Tufts Mountain Club. She has interned at the
Minneapolis Federal Reserve, worked with immigrants and refugees at the
International Institute of Boston, and has been a counselor at a French language
immersion camp in Hackensack, Minnesota. Madeline most recently interned at
Corporate Accountability International, a nonprofit organization that has been
waging and winning campaigns against abusive and corporate actions for thirty
years. She aspires to combine her interest in activism with her passion for the
written word in her career.
Kathleen Cohen, A12,
is a senior majoring in International Relations with a concentration in Global
Health, Nutrition and the Environment. In addition to her major, she is
interested in foreign languages and studies French and Russian. She has studied
abroad in France in the summer with the Tufts in Talloires program and also for
a semester in St. Petersburg, Russia at St. Petersburg State University. She
lived with a host family in both locations, fully immersing her in the culture.
During the summer, Kathleen has interned at Girls' LEAP, a non-profit that
teaches Boston area girls self-defense. During the school year, she is actively
involved in Buddhist Sangha, plays the flute, and continues to volunteer for
Girls' LEAP.
Kristen Collins, A12,
is a senior from northern New Jersey. During her years of studying Russian in
high school, she became interested foreign languages, politics, the media, and
cultural studies. She majors in International Relations with a concentration in
Europe and the former Soviet Union as well as minors in Film Studies and Russian
Language, synthesizing her passions for visual expression and international
politics. Freshman year of college she began learning French and is currently
studying abroad with the Tufts-in-Paris program. At Tufts she spends her time
working on independent film projects, contributing to the Tufts Daily as a
Photography Editor, and DJing a radio show for WMFO. Last summer she interned
with the Center for New American Media, a documentary production company.
Patrick Dugoni, A12,
is a senior from the San Francisco Bay Area. He is double majoring in
International Relations (with a concentration in International Finance) and
Quantitative Economics. Patrick studied abroad at Tufts-in-Paris in Spring 2011.
At Tufts, he served as Vice President of Finance at Tufts Student Resources and
is a member of Tufts Financial Group and Tufts Economics Society. Last summer,
Patrick interned at Google with the public policy team in Washington, DC. In his
spare time, Patrick enjoys following Bay Area sports teams, especially the 2010
World Series Champion San Francisco Giants.
Zachary Drucker, A12,
is a senior from Scarsdale, NY, is a Spanish major and an international
relations double major with a concentration in Europe and the Former Soviet
Union. He is an editor for the Tufts Daily as well as an executive board member
of JumboCast, Tufts' student-run, athletics web-casting organization. He
recently studied abroad in Seville, Spain.
Vittoria Elliott, A12,
is a senior from Aurora, Colorado double majoring in Psychology and
International Relations with a concentration in International Security.
Vittoria spent the fall of 2010 studying abroad at the University of Ghana,
where she interned for the Institute for Economic Affairs. She returned to
Ghana on during the summer of 2011 on an International Relations Research
Scholar grant to conduct independent field research on NGO accountability.
During her time at Tufts, Vittoria has written as an editorialist for the Tufts
Daily and is currently the Chief Editor of the Tufts Historical Review. She is
the Economic Development and Defense and Diplomacy Policy Center Director for
the Tufts chapter of the Roosevelt Institute, a national student think tank.
Liana Fedele, A12,
is a senior from Glen Ellyn, Illinois. She is double majoring in International
Relations and Anthropology, with an IR concentration in Global Health,
Nutrition, and the Environment. While refraining from studying abroad during the
school year, Liana plans to conduct anthropological fieldwork on the fragrance
industry in France over the summer. Her main research interests include
international health policy, female reproductive health, global pharmaceuticals,
and undernutrition. At Tufts, she volunteers with the Leonard Carmichael Society
and helps organize events with the student Anthropology Collective. Liana hopes
to pursue a formal law education after completing her undergraduate work at
Tufts.
Allison Fisk, A12,
is a senior from Kensington, Maryland. She is majoring in International
Relations with an Africa area study and is minoring in Film Studies. Allison
recently studied abroad in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania during the Spring Semester of
2011 and is combining her academic interests by filming a documentary about
primary school education in Dar es Salaam. At Tufts, Allison is a Writing Fellow
and is involved with Tufts Mountain Club. She has interned with the Children of
Kibera Foundation, Mapendo International, and Voice of America's "TV to Africa"
program.
Luke Fraser, A12,
is a senior at Tufts majoring in both International Relations and Economics, with a
strong interest in the fields of economic development and international finance.
He spent a semester as an Economics Research Assistant for Professor Stelios
Michalopoulos, focusing on the relationship between a country's invasion history
and its institutional stability. Additionally, he spent the summer after his
junior year as an intern for Liberty Mutual's Commercial Markets Division,
working to reduce the risk that corporate clients face. He is also involved with
the Tufts Chapter of Engineers Without Borders, working with a community in El
Salvador on a potable water project.
Elizabeth Georgiopoulos, A12,
is a senior majoring in International Relations, with a concentration in the
United States in World Affairs, and Spanish. At Tufts, Elizabeth is the
President of the Tufts Hellenic Society, has volunteered at local soup kitchens
though the Leonard Carmichael Society, and has also been a member of Pangaea.
Her work experience includes an internship at Bowditch and Dewey Attorneys in
Framingham, MA, an internship for MA State Senator Scott Brown at the
Massachusetts State House, and an internship this past summer at the Greek
Consulate General in Boston. Upon graduation, Elizabeth plans to pursue a degree
in law.
Siau Xi Goh, A12,
is a senior from Singapore majoring in International Relations with a
concentration in International Security. She has participated in an exchange
program in Lyon, France and studied abroad in Beijing in Fall 2010, during which
she traveled through northeast China. She is especially interested in East and
Southeast Asian politics, as well as education issues. She has interned at the
Consortium for Gender, Security and Human Rights, is an active member of the
Singapore Students Association e-board, and was part of the team which organized
the 2010 Tufts Energy Conference. She also enjoys strumming the ukulele in her
free time.
Mariah Grover, A12,
is a senior from Bar Harbor, Maine. She is majoring in International Relations with
a concentration in International Environmental Economics. She spent the fall as
a participant in Tufts' Semester in Washington Program, and is currently
studying in Granada, Spain. Mariah has worked for the National Park Service,
and, more recently, has been an intern in Amazon Conservation Association's DC
offices. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in environmental
advocacy and law.
Ellen Kan, A12,
is a senior from Singapore majoring in Quantitative Economics and International
Relations with a regional concentration on East and Southeast Asia. Her
interests lie in Chinese politics and political economy, and China's evolving
role in the international community At Tufts, Ellen is involved with the Tufts
Daily, having previously served as Managing Editor and Executive News Editor for
the paper. She has also been a member of the Tufts Financial Group, volunteered
with the Leonard Carmichael Society's ESL and Best Buddy Programs, and served in
on the executive board of the Singapore Students Association. She interned with
the Singapore Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva last summer, and
with the Shanghai office of a U.S. law firm in summer 2009.
Martine Kaplan, A13,
is a junior from the Washington, DC area spending her year abroad at the London
School of Economics. With a concentration on the US in World Affairs, she is
interested in gaining a broader global perspective on foreign policy and
international cooperation and studying the convergence of many policy issues,
specifically human rights, gender equality, migration, religious identity and
security. On campus, Martine was President of the Tufts Queer-Straight Alliance,
a handler for the women’s ultimate frisbee team, and a member of various
advocacy groups. Taking full advantage of growing up in DC, she has interned for
several Washington offices, including for then-Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and
the United States Global Leadership Coalition.
Maya Kohli, A12,
is a senior from Portland, Oregon, majoring in International Relations with a
concentration in economic development. She spent the Spring 2011 semester
studying in Barcelona, Spain, where she took classes in Spanish art, poetry and
cinema. During her years at Tufts, Maya has interned a nonprofit in Katmandu,
Nepal, and as an education intern at the United Nations Association of Greater
Boston. At Tufts, Maya is aneditor for the Tufts Daily newspaper as well as a
member of the Chi Omega sorority, and has participated in a variety of community
service related programs through LCS.
Katrina Knisely, A12,
is a senior from central Pennsylvania. She is double majoring in Economics and
International Relations, with a concentration in regional and comparative
analysis of Europe and the former Soviet Union. She spent her junior abroad in
Granada, Spain (fall) and Munich, Germany (spring). Her interests lie in
migration policy and the economics of the European Union. In addition, she is
fluent in German and continues to study Spanish. Outside of the IR program,
Katrina has organized ESL classes through the Leonard Carmichael Society, copy
edited for the Tufts Daily and played Women's Club Rugby for two years. She also
plays the oboe and has been part of both the Tufts Symphony Orchestra and the
Wind Ensemble. She interned in summer 2010 at the Welcoming Center for New
Pennsylvanians, an economic development organization helping immigrants
integrate into life in the Philadelphia area. Upon graduation, she hopes to
continue working in the field of immigration.
Elizabeth Langer, A12,
is a senior from New York City double majoring in International Relations (with
a concentration in International Developmental Economics) and Economics. She
recently studied abroad in Florence, Italy where she studied European Union and
United States relations. Her leadership roles on campus include President of 85
Broads, a global networking group of professional women, and Head Peer Leader
for the FIT Pre-Orientation Program. She has also just finished her term as
President of Chi Omega. Elizabeth spent last summer and fall interning for the
consulting firm McKinsey & Company, working in External Communications for their
Marketing & Sales and Financial Services departments.
Tianyin Luo, A12,
is a senior majoring in Political Science and International Relations. Her
interests are numerous and she would gladly spend hours talking about them over
coffee. Specifically, she is interested in International and human rights law.
She mentored under a Professor at Northwestern Law on creating a database that
compiled information about the death penalty worldwide for four years.
Additionally, she is interested in nuclear politics and has conducted research
on the nuclear relationship between the United States and China.
Saba Movahedi, A12,
is a senior majoring in Economics and International Relations with a focus on
Economic Development at Tufts University. Although she was born in the United
States and has lived in Brussels, Belgium throughout most of her life, Saba's
family originates from Iran and she has a great love for her culture and
background. Since attending Tufts, Saba has focused her interest on Economic
Development. During her Junior year, Saba took part in the Tufts in Oxford
program and attended Pembroke College. While at Oxford, she was the Training
Coordinator for the Oxford Development Abroad organization and took part in the
planning and training of volunteers for development programs in Morocco, Uganda,
and Nepal. Currently, Saba is a Senior at Tufts and will be finishing her degree
in December while also working full-time at the Institute for Global Leadership.
Weilin Mun, A13,
is a junior majoring in International Relations with a concentration in
International Security. She is from Singapore, and her many trips to Thailand,
Cambodia and Myanmar have caused her to be interested in issues concerning
migration, refugees, human trafficking and post-conflict reconciliation in the
Southeast Asian region. At Tufts, Weilin is involved in the Tufts Christian
fellowship, BUILD India and the marathon team. She has also served on the
executive board of the Singaporean Students' Association and volunteered with
the Leonard Carmichael Society's Special Friends program. This past summer, she
interned at the Office for Women's Development at the Ministry of Community
Development, Youth and Sports in Singapore and is currently studying abroad in
Copenhagen for the fall semester.
Namson Ngo-Le, A13,
is a junior triple majoring in International Relations (with a regional
concentration of East & Southeast Asia), Economics, and Chinese. He is from San
Jose, California and has also lived in Somerville, Shanghai, and Saigon. Namson
grew up speaking Vietnamese and English at home and has studied both Chinese and
French. He is currently the Techmaster of the Tufts Vietnamese Students Club and
has spent time volunteering and canvassing for local political campaigns back
home. In his spare time, Namson enjoys hip hop music and basketball.
David Wolf Noam, A12,
is a senior from Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is majoring in International
Relations with a concentration in International Finance as well as minoring in
Entrepreneurial Leadership Studies. Last spring he studied abroad in Tübingen,
Germany, and interned for a social fundraising start up in Munich called,
Altruja. Additionally he has worked for the Boston Red Sox in their Community
Relations department, and is now interning with the Venture Capital Firm, Avalon
Ventures. He is currently a mentor for the Tufts Chapter of Compass Fellows, a
social entrepreneurship fellowship designed for Freshmen.
Sharmaine Oh, A12,
is a senior, majoring in Quantitative Economics and International Relations,
with an International Trade concentration. At Tufts, she has been actively
involved with Tufts Energy Forum (TEF), holding positions in the Tufts Energy
Conference (TEC) team in 2009 and 2010. Sharmaine has also been involved with
the Singapore Students' Association (SSA), Anchord, Tufts Christian Acapella
Group, and Tufts Christian Fellowship. Having grown up in Singapore, she has
observed the rapid transformation of the urban fabric and skyline of the small
island city. This has spurred her interest in urban sustainability and urban
heritage preservation in key developing cities around the world. She recently
studied abroad at Beijing University.
Amy Ouellette, A12,
is a senior majoring in International Relations and Political Science. This past
summer, Amy studied abroad in Holland, focusing on international criminal law.
She recently interned at the Satellite Sentinel Project at Harvard Humanitarian
Initiative, helping to track human security violations on the border of Sudan
and South Sudan using satellite technology. At Tufts, Amy has been a member of
BUILD Guatemala when she and her peers traveled to rural coffee
cooperative in Guatemala to begin implementation of a sustainable development
project. A native of Massachusetts, she loves film, traveling, and gymnastics.
Andrew Parker, A12,
is a senior from Sudbury, Massachusetts. He is majoring in International
Relations with a concentration in international security, and is working on a
minor in economics. Andrew participates in the Tufts chapter of the Best
Buddies program, working one-on-one with mentally challenged adults from the
Boston area. He is also an avid hiker, and plans to hike the Appalachian
Trail after his graduation. He recently helped organize the 2011 Global
Investment Symposium as a part of International Economic Alliance, a nonprofit
organization.
Joshua Ross, A12,
is a senior majoring in International Relations with a regional focus on East &
Southeast Asia. He has a great
interest in the economics of the region, most specifically of Japan, and thus
spent his semester abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan.
Joshua also teaches English to El Salvadorian immigrants and speaks
Spanish at an advanced level. Upon
graduating, Joshua expects to join a international firm providing consulting
services in the marketing and market expansion fields.
Nathalie Schils, A12,
is a senior from Cleveland, Ohio. She is an International Relations and
Environmental Studies double major, concentrating in Global Health, Nutrition
and the Environment. She is a member of Tufts University's Varsity Tennis Team
and the Marketing Manager of Tufts Student Resources. She is also a member of
the Marketing Team for the 2011 Tufts Energy Conference as well as a member of
the International Relations Director's Leadership Council. Nathalie grew up
speaking French and English at home and she is currently studying Spanish at
Tufts. She is interested in environmental policy, especially that concerning
energy security and resource management in the developing world. She also enjoys
traveling and cooking.
Maggie Selvin, A13,
is a junior from Pawling, NY. She is an International Relations major with a
concentration in Latin America. She is currently studying abroad in Santiago,
Chile where she is living in the midst of a historic nationwide student movement
for equal education. Back at Tufts, she works at LIFT-Somerville, advocating for
low-income immigrants in the community. She is involved with Tufts’ chapter of
Engineers Without Borders and recently traveled to El Salvador on a project to
increase rural access to potable water. Additionally, she is a Writing Fellow
and a member of the Advisory Committee for Endowment Responsibility. Her
internship experience includes two summers at a consulting firm and a current
position at the non-profit environmental organization Chile Ambiente.
Eric Siegel, A13,
is a junior from the San Francisco Bay Area and
majoring in International Relations with a regional concentration in the Middle
East. His academic interests include conflict negotiation, immigration and food
security. Last summer Eric interned in Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s district
office and continued his work as a student ambassador for Tufts University’s
office of university advancement. He is currently studying abroad for the fall
semester at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Eric Sinski, A12,
is a senior majoring in international relations with a concentration in Latin
America. He has studied abroad in Chile while observing the positive and
negative effects of neoliberalism on various groups constituting Chilean
society. He plans to teach abroad in China after graduation and possibly return
to school whenever the time feels right. His academic interests involve
sociology, psychology, human rights, and eastern philosophy. Outside of the
classroom, he is involved in martial arts such as kung fu and soo bahk do, has
hosted a radio show on WMFO and has participated in various human rights groups
on campus. Enrolled in EPIIC for this academic year, Eric hopes to delve into
the various international conflicts that are currently occurring, while
exploring the causes of conflict in human society at large.
Andrew Sprague, A13,
is a junior at Tufts from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He is currently majoring in
international relations and history, with a Russian concentration in both. For
the fall semester he is studying abroad in Aix-en-Provence, specifically
focusing on the antagonism between German and French nationalism. While in
France he hopes to travel across Europe, learning about diverse cultures and the
various perceptions of Russians, Americans, and the LGBT community. In his spare
time he enjoys volunteering with the elderly and the homeless.
Marian Swain, A12,
is a senior from Lincoln, Massachusetts. Her IR concentration is in
Environmental Economics, and her second major is in German. She spent all of her
junior year studying abroad with the Tufts program in Tübingen, Germany. In
Germany she enjoyed studying European Union politics and especially Germany's
economic role in Europe. After graduation she hopes to work in the clean energy
field and also hopes to be able to use her German language skills by working for
a multinational firm.
Ati Waldman, A12,
is a senior studying International Relations with a concentration on the Middle
East, and spent last semester studying and living in a homestay in Paris with
Tufts-in-Paris. She is passionate about what she studies, motivating her to
become involved with a number of projects on and off campus. Most recently she
has begun her tenure as Co Editor-in-Chief of Hemispheres: The Tufts
Undergraduate Journal of International Affairs, holds a Business Associate
position at the Fletcher Forum of World Affairs, and is a Strategy and Programs
Intern at Seeds of Peace. She has also worked with refugees from around the
world at Jewish Vocational Services, Boston, teaching English, computer skills,
and providing job coaching.
Menglu Wang, A12,
is a senior who majors in International Relations with a concentration in the
United States and general psychology. This combination of majors results from
her strong interest in cross-cultural exchanges. An international student from
China, she spent her junior year abroad at Sciences Po in Paris, France. At
Tufts she is a layout editor for the Tufts Daily, a Chinese and French tutor at
the ARC, and a student supervisor in the Tisch Library. She is also involved in
volunteering activities ranging from psychology labs to the Boston Marathon. She
has done an internship with the United Nations Association of Greater Boston for
one semester as well as an internship in Zhongshan Mingjing law firm in China
for one summer; both were enjoyable professional experiences from which she much
benefited. After Tufts she will choose between pursuing a law degree in the US
and returning to Sciences Po in Paris for a master's degree.
Rachael Wolber, A12,
is a senior from the San Francisco Bay Area, majoring in International Relations
(with a concentration in Environmental Economics) and Environmental Studies. At
Tufts, she is an intern for the Office of Sustainability, where she coordinates
the Eco-Reps program. She is also a fellow for Tufts STOMP, implementing
engineering education in local elementary schools. She is also a part of the
Tufts Women's Ultimate Frisbee team, Tufts Mountain Club, and the Tufts
Wilderness Orientation staff. This semester, she is studying urban policy and
sustainable development with the International Honors Program, traveling to
India, Senegal, and Argentina. Through this experience, she hopes to deepen her
knowledge of the strategies that can create more sustainable cities.
Brian Wolf, A13,
is a junior from Los Angeles, California. He is majoring in International
Relations with an IR concentration in Global Health, Nutrition, and the
Environment. At Tufts, he volunteers at and coordinates fundraising events for
Sharewood Clinic, a free healthcare run by Tufts University in Malden that
provides primary care to the medically underserved. In addition, he is the
managing editor for Tuftscope, an interdisciplinary journal that focuses on
health, bioethics and policy. After completing his undergraduate work at Tufts,
Brian hopes to pursue a career in medicine.
Alexandra (Allie) Wollum, A13,
is a junior at Tufts from
Denver, Colorado. She is majoring in International Relations concentrating on
Global Health, Nutrition and the Environment and Community Health. She has a
deep interest in international development and human rights especially in
regards to health conditions. She is interested in the influence of
international organizations and regional infrastructure and their influence on
health and behavior.She is involved in the group BUILD, working on a
sustainable development project in Tamil Nadu, India. She also volunteers for
LIFT Somerville to combat poverty and has interned at the Colorado Children’s
Campaign, a non-profit that advocates for children's issues in policy. At Tufts,
Allie also sings in a jazz ensemble and is a part of the EMPOWR Fellowship for
