 Associated Press (Outside Boston)
To inquire about the program, write or call your nearest AP bureau and say you want to apply for the Internship Program. The deadline for the summer 2004 program is Friday, November 14, 2003.

Description:
The Associated Press is a not-for-profit cooperative. AP is the source of print, photos, graphics, radio, television, and online news for more than one billion people a day. The AP Internship Program is a training program for aspiring print, photo, graphics, radio broadcast and multimedia journalists. Up to 22 interns are selected each year to train for 12 weeks in a domestic AP bureau under the supervision of a designated trainer.

Requirements for application are as follows:

  • An application package:
    These documents should be filled out when you come to take the news writing test. Application packages cannot be mailed out.
  • A 300-word essay
  • A one-page autobiographical piece on why you are interested in journalism and a career with AP.
  • Creativity is encouraged.
  • A resume, with clips:
    Three to five clips representing the range of your ability.
  • References:
    Three reference letters, either delivered in a signed, sealed envelope or mailed on the ground or electronically.
  • An interview with an AP representative: Ideally, the chief of your nearest AP bureau.)
  • A timed news writing test: Tests may be taken at almost any AP bureau. Photo, graphics and broadcast applicants are also required to submit samples of their work.

The program is open to full-time juniors, seniors and graduate students at American colleges and universities.
