Academic Year 2007-2008 Event Summary
International Relations Alumni Barbeque,
June 27, 2007
The first of its kind, this was a fun and informal evening of networking and
intellectual stimulation for former IR majors and those who work in the field of
international relations in Washington D.C. State Department Deputy Spokesman (and
double Jumbo) Tom Casey offered brief remarks on the status of hot international
issues and fielded many engaging questions from attendees. Current Tufts
undergraduates interning for the summer in D.C. were also present and took
advantage of the great networking opportunity.
Orientation Event, September 3, 2007
Hosted by the IR Director, this information session informed incoming freshmen
on the specifics of the IR major and the many advantages of one of the best and
most popular programs at Tufts.
Meet the Mentors, October 31, 2007
Informal event for prospective majors to meet students from the IR mentors program and ask a
variety of questions about the program including study abroad, advisors,
courses, etc.
Anne E. Borghesani Symposium, November 5, 2007
Former Borghesani Prize winners shared their experiences from their research and travels abroad.
Not only was this a great opportunity for sophomores and juniors to learn how
they could benefit from the
support of a Borghesani Scholarship, but also
students enjoyed cultural foods from the previous winners' locales.
The UN and Global Active Citizenship: A First-Hand View, November 13, 2007
A panel of Fletcher
students, who had previously worked for the United Nations, spoke candidly about
their experiences, the relevance of the UN today, and how they found their
position at the UN. In addition, they gave excellent career advice to students
interested in working for the UN.
A Debate on Global Active Citizenship,
November 13, 2007
Professor Robert Devigne,
Department Chair of the Political Science Program, and Sherman Teichman,
Director of the Institute for Global Leadership,
debated the question, "Should
global active citizenship be an integral part of higher education at Tufts?"
Students, faculty, and members of the Tufts administration also participated in
this lively evening. The event was very well attended by the entire Tufts
community and provoked lasting debate through the school year.
Latin America Colloquium- A New Reality: Leftward Shift of Latin America,
December 7,
2007
This event featured an
academic discussion by Tufts and area university Latin America scholars on the
leftward shift in Latin American politics. It was an opportunity to
create an intellectual discussion about the
roots of such a shift, greater understanding
of the current climate, and its tremendous implications in Latin America.
Issue as Muse: A Night of IR Artistic Inspiration,
February 2, 2008
The first annual Issue as
Muse event was a spectacular evening of student performances that bridged the
arts and academia. This special multicultural evening was based on a challenge
to some of the most creative and dynamic groups on campus to use their
incredible passions and talents to design performances inspired by global issues
of their choosing.
Students showcased their talents in song, dance, mime,
acting, and poetry; which were prefaced by a reading of the international issue
that inspired them.

Fletcher Networking Night,
February 5,
2008
Undergraduate students
interested in careers in the broad field of international affairs had the
opportunity to speak with Fletcher Graduates about job searching, internships,
and career development strategies. An evening of informal conversations and
networking, bridged the International Relations Program and the Fletcher School.
Majors Week Event,
February 25, 2008
This information session
informed prospective majors on the specifics of the IR major and the many

Career Panel Night,
March 5, 2008
Co-sponsored by the
Program in International Relations and Tufts Career Services, this event
featured a panel of alumni discussing their experiences in the field of
international affairs.
The United States and the Middle East: What Comes Next after Iraq? A Student
Colloquium,
March 29, 2008
This event featured two
consecutive panels that addressed current international and domestic issues
facing the Middle East. As a follow up to the Fares Center Conference on March
27-28th, Tufts students shared their insights on the conference topics and
discussed issues from their own related research.
Thesis Exchange Celebration,
April 23, 2008
After monthly support
meetings run by Prof. Howard Malchow of History, this event celebrated this
year's senior honors theses students from History, International Relations, and
Political Science. They gave brief presentations on their interesting work and
it was a good opportunity for potential thesis writers to talk with these
experienced students.
IR Honor Society Induction Ceremony,
April 23, 2008
The annual induction
ceremony for Sigma Iota Rho, the National Honor Society for International
Relations, featured Professor Jeff Taliaferro
as this year's recipient of the
Sigma Iota Rho Distinguished Professor Award and keynote speaker.
Live Jumbo Aid,
April 24, 2008
This human rights fair was
a collaboration of the IR Director's Leadership Council, Pangea, and several
other student organizations. The event included informational booths and
interactive activities, speakers, food, and performances.
Tufts Program in International Relations 30th Anniversary Reception,
April 25, 2008
A celebratory evening for
students, faculty, and friends of the program to look back on three decades of
IR history at
Tufts and celebrate the community we have built.
IR Coffeehouse
Every other week, students
gathered in an informal setting to meet and network with fellow students of IR,
share what they know, and learn from each other. It was an opportunity to
strengthen the IR community, to ask questions or voice concerns about the IR
program, and to have good conversation about world affairs.
Diplomat-in-Residence Events
This series of events
featured discussions with and presentations by Deborah Graze, U.S. Department of
State Diplomat-in-Residence at Tufts University. Topics discussed included, but
were not limited to, internships, career tracks and specialties within the
Foreign Service, and myths and misperceptions about working in the Foreign
Service.
