Career Development: Exploring IR Careers

Exploring Careers through Tufts Career Services

Career Services offers a number of resources for exploring careers that are useful for IR majors. To get started exploring these resources, click here.

IR Concentrations and their corresponding APSIA* Career Fields in International Affairs

IR Thematic Concentrations are designed to give students specialized knowledge in important sub-fields of international affairs.  While an IR major should be prepared to take a variety of paths following graduation, a given Concentration may prepare a student especially well for entry into a particular career field or graduate program.

To help students explore potential careers in the field and plan their future course of study, the IR Program has matched each Thematic Concentration in its curriculum with major career sub-fields related to that path of study.

These sub-fields have been collectively identified by career offices within the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA)*.  Students may wish to refer to APSIA’s comprehensive International Careers Guide to explore more specifics about these sub-fields.

Please note that while the career fields have been listed under the IR concentrations that best prepare students for such careers, each concentration is designed to prepare students for a wide range of career paths, possibly including careers that are not mentioned under that concentration.

*The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) is an organization that consists of the top graduate schools in international affairs and public policy around the world. APSIA has put together a comprehensive International Careers Guide to help students explore what type of career they may want to pursue after school, and what track of study in international affairs or graduate degree will best prepare them for that field.

APSIA Career Guides

The Program in International Relations is pleased to announce that Tufts Webcenter now hosts descriptions of 30 career paths in international affairs, including information about specific jobs, expected salaries, qualifications needed, and lists of specific employers and online resources. Extensive descriptions for careers in Government, Health & Nutrition, International Law, and Security are just to name a few. These documents were modified by the International Relations Program from their original versions, published by the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). To view them, log-in to WebCenter, https://webcenter.studentservices.tufts.edu, and visit the Career Services Web Resources.
