Career Development:

The IR major offers preparation for a broad range of careers. While this clearly holds advantages, you will be much better prepared to maximize these options if you start career planning early at Tufts. To support you in this process, Tufts offers a number of resources.

Tufts Career Services
Career Services in Dowling Hall offers an array of resources including career counselors, workshops and seminars, online databases, and a library with significant holdings. The IR Program works closely with Career Services to generate workshops and materials targeted at international careers. Whether your thinking about careers is in the most formative stages or you want specific insights about select employers, Career Services can help. Make an appointment with a career counselor and keep an eye out for upcoming workshops.

Here are some helpful resources on the Tufts Career Services Website:

IR Program Office
The IR Program Office attempts to supplement Career Services offerings with limited resources specifically targeting international affairs careers. In weekly e-bulletins and its quarterly newsletter, IR advertises internship opportunities, scholarships, and other career related notices. A list of currently available IR internship opportunities is on the newly revamped internship site. The IR Assistant Director, Kirk Lange, is also happy to meet with students with career development questions; please stop by Cabot 605 during his office hours.

Advisors and Faculty
Remember that your advisor and other members of the IR Core Faculty can provide insights and ideas about careers in international affairs. This is another reason to seek out an advisor who shares your intellectual interests within the field as early as you can in your Tufts career. If an advisor knows you well -- and sees your achievements and direction over time -- they are much better able to write a strong recommendation letter. (Remember that your advisor and other members of faculty often have full advising loads, so giving significant lead time when requesting appointments or recommendations is critical.)

Internships
The IR Program provides online internship resources with organization lists ranging from international human rights and international culture/education/health to international policy analysis and international business. View our internship resources here.
