Rationale
Students of international relations must have oral and written proficiency in at least one other language besides their native tongue. Thorough language study is an essential tool for developing cultural literacy and sensitivity which are vital to todays world. Superior language ability is a very important goal of the IR major.
The level of proficiency required is the highest attainable for students who begin a new language at Tufts: the equivalent of completing eight semesters of study in a single language.
