Arab Cyborgs: The Post-Humanist Narrative of Return in al-Shanfarā and Hudā Barakāt
Professor Tarek El-Ariss, Department of Comparative Literature, University of Texas, Austin.
Wednesday January 28, 2015
12.00-1.30pm, Eaton Hall 202
How does one break with the tribe? What kind of violence and cruelty does this break involve? In what way does the position of the outcast or the exile unsettle the dialectics of belonging and interrogate notions of community and the human? This lecture addresses these questions by investigating the trauma of separation and the post-humanist narrative of return in works by al-Shanfarā and Hudā Barakāt. Sponsored by the Tufts Arabic program, co-sponsored by the Center for Humanities at Tufts, the Tufts Colonialism Studies program, and the Tufts Middle Eastern Studies program.
