Program Activities

International Research Opportunities

Each year at least two students will have the opportunity to work for two months at our collaborating international institutions (see links below and Our Partners). Students will typically be accompanied by an IGERT faculty member for the initial set up of the collaboration, they will then be expected to complete the project with the international partners.

Student applications for these placements will be made to the IGERT Program Committee. Placements will be awarded based on a student's good academic progress towards the PhD, a demonstrated international research need, and the supporting letters from the advisors and the international host. Travel and lodging arrangements will be made through established institutional channels. Students working overseas will focus on developing new approaches to research problems, adding new research methods to their skillset, and strengthening the international collaboration. They will remain members of the Research Mentoring Teams and their projects will be related to the main themes being addressed by the team. Students will be required to maintain blogs of their academic activities and to participate in regular research team meetings by videoconference.
