Immigration Info for Students
Obtaining an Extension of Stay:
Documentation
For Graduate Students:
- VERIFY EXTENSION DATE – Provide the International Office
with Letter from Academic Advisor. The letter must be on official
Tufts blue-seal stationery with his/her business card attached. The
letter must address the minimum of the following points. We will not
accept a letter that is incomplete (i.e., does not contain the
required information listed below):
- List Academic Program;
- Date Expected to Complete Program;
- Must confirm that you are making normal progress towards your
current degree;
- Confirm that they are agreeable in giving you additional time to
complete the program;
- List the New Anticipated Completion Date;
- List detailed Reason for the Delay/Request for Extension of
Program;
- Confirm that you have been in full-time status for the past nine
months.
- VERIFY TUITION STATUS - Your Graduate School's office must email your International
Center Advisor the amount of tuition you owe and whether or not all tuition is paid:
- A&S Students obtain the letter from the Office of Graduate
Studies
(Ballou
Hall, 1st Floor);
- Nutrition School Students obtain the letter from the Nutrition school
(150
Harrison Avenue, Boston);
- Gordon Institute Students, obtain the letter from the Gordon
Institute
(4 Colby St.).
- FINANCIAL DOCUMENTATION: Obtain a letter from the professor for
whom you work which indicates your monthly salary and the length of
time you will be employed. If you are not working in your
department, please obtain either a bank statement which indicates
that you possess sufficient funds or a letter of support and
accompanying bank statement from your sponsor indicating s/he will
support you for the duration of your extension of stay. ANY
FINANCIAL DOCUMENTATION SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THAT YOU HAVE AT LEAST
$1700 PER MONTH FOR ASE GRADUATE SCHOOL AND $1795 FOR THE NUTRITION AND VETERINARY SCHOOLS
FOR EVERY MONTH YOU INTEND TO EXTEND YOUR STAY.
NOTE: If you are here with a spouse and/or child, you must also
demonstrate that you have sufficient monthly funds to support them.
You must show $360 per month for your spouse and $260 per month for
each child for every month you wish to extend your stay.
For Undergraduate Students:
- VERIFY EXTENSION DATE - Obtain a Letter from your
Academic Dean:
The letter must document the following information. The International
Center will not accept an incomplete letter:
- Confirm that you have been in full-time status for the past 9
months;
- List detailed Reason for the Delay/Request for Extension
of Program;
- List the New Anticipated Completion Date;
- FINANCIAL DOCUMENTATION: Please obtain EITHER a bank
statement, in your name, which indicates that you possess sufficient
funds OR a letter of support from your sponsor and his/her bank
statement, which indicate he/she is willing to continue financing
your education and living expenses for the duration of your
extension of stay. For the 2007/2008 academic year, the letter
should specify that your sponsor is willing to provide at least
$55,033 per year for your schooling.
After the International Center receives all of the above-listed
information, and reviews the materials, we will issue a new immigration
document within two weeks.
