Immigration Info for Students
Obtaining an Extension of Stay
Every academic program at Tufts is expected to be completed in a
certain amount of years. This duration of time is indicated in Section 5
of your Form I-20 and in Section 3 on your Form DS-2019. Since
students should normally be making good progress towards obtaining their
degree, extensions are not common. However, the U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS) recognizes that there may be unusual
circumstances in a student's academic career that require him or her to
apply for an extension of stay. If you need an extension of stay, you
must meet with an International Center staff person to discuss your
situation. Once you have provided all required documents, a new
immigration form will be issued within 2 to 3 weeks.
Please note that this procedure may be initiated no earlier than
60 days before the expiration date on the Form I-20 (Section 5) or Form
DS-2019 (Section 3) and no later than the expiration date listed on your
Form I-20 (Section 5) or DS-2019 (Section 3). After consulting with
an advisor at the International Center, please obtain the following
documentation from the appropriate departments. Extensions can only
be authorized in one-year intervals. We encourage you to expedite
the completion of your program as much as possible.
If you are currently working on-campus, please remember to update your
I-9 at the Human Resources Service Center.
After consulting a staff member of the International Center, please
obtain the following documentation from the appropriate departments:
For Graduate Students:
- EXTENSION DATE LETTER
- TUITION STATUS LETTER
- FINANCIAL DOCUMENTATION
After we receive all of the requested documentation, and we review the materials, we will issue a new immigration document. Please allow us
two weeks after we receive all of these items, for us to provide you with a new immigration form.
