Academic Training for J-1 Students
Pre-Completion Academic Training Application Procedure:
To apply for Academic Training before graduation, you must first obtain a job offer.
You may apply for Pre-Completion Academic Training any time during your study program, after being in student status for at least nine months.
Bear in mind that processing time requires one to two weeks.
Once you have secured a job offer, you must collect the following 2 letters:
- Letter #1: Academic Advisor Letter
- Letter #2: Graduation Confirmation/Full-Time Status Letters
Once you have both letters, call the International Center (617-627-3458) to make an appointment with
an advisor. You will need to bring the following documents to the appointment:
- Both letters described above
- Your Form DS-2019
- Your Form I-94 (small, white card in your passport)
- Your passport
- Proof of income of at least $1,440 per month, as an individual; (plus $260 per month additional per child;
plus $360 per month additional for a spouse)
Please note: If you are in the U.S. with family, please be sure to bring Items #2,3,4 listed above, for all family members.
If you are working during the academic year, you are limited to working no more than twenty hours per week. Although you are only able to work part-time, this work is counted as
full-time Academic Training. You are, however, able to work during the summers and during vacations on a full-time basis.
Please also note: If your Form DS-2019 was issued by another sponsor (for example, I.I.E., Amideast etc.) then you will need to apply to
your program sponsor for Academic Training permission, not to the International Center.
Letter #1: Academic Advisor Letter
- The goals and objectives of your academic training work experience
- Description of the work experience, including location, name and address of your direct supervisor, number of hours per week, the start and end dates of the position
- How the training relates to your major field of study
- Why this training is an integral part of the academic program
Letter #2: Graduation Confirmation/Full-Time
Status Letters
You must also obtain a letter confirming the exact date of your graduation and your full-time, good academic status. If you are an undergraduate student, you must obtain a "good academic status over the past year" letter from the Registrar's Office and a graduation date letter from Carol Downing in Dowling Hall. If you are a graduate student, you must obtain a letter from your advisor.
The letter must confirm the date you have completed all requirements for the degree.
