The Spirituality and Human Development Program, a research division of the
Institute for Applied Research on Youth Development, is dedicated to
bringing scientific attention to the role of religion and spirituality in
the development of diverse individuals, in diverse ecocultural contexts,
across the life span. As an integral dimension of culture and ethnic
heritage, and thus as an important part of the majority of the human
population's life experience, we see the role of religion and spirituality
in human development as a heretofore neglected, but natural and necessary,
focus of inquiry in contemporary developmental science. We believe that
such a focus can enrich contemporary research on topics such as immigration
and acculturation; families; national, cultural, ethnic, racial and sexual
identity development; health and well-being; education, and globalization.
Our aims in this program include:
- the production of high quality scientific scholarship on the potential
role of religion and spirituality in the development of human beings,
especially youth, over time;
- the generation of interest and collaborative scholarship in this
emerging domain of inquiry;
- the education of high-quality undergraduate and graduate students
whose research interests lie in the areas of religion, spirituality,
and human development; and
- the dissemination of accessible, non-sectarian, scientific knowledge
to policy makers, educators, social workers, nurses, mental health
professionals, youth leaders, and other helping and youth-serving
professionals concerning the current state of knowledge regarding
religion and spirituality in human development.
