  Research: Positive Youth Development Program

4-H Study of Positive Youth Development

Data Collectors

We appreciate your help in collecting data for the 4-H study of Positive Youth Development. As a data collector, you are an integral part of the research team. Below we have provided links you may find helpful as you prepare for the day of data collection.

What to expect
Below you will find the step-by-step stages of data collection in which you will be directly involved. Hopefully this will give you a clearer understanding of your role in this important research.

  1. The specifics of the data collection will be coordinated between the site and our research office at Tufts University. We will need to know when you will be available to collect data. Once the data collection is organized we will provide you with the information you will need (i.e., the date, time, place, etc.) so that you may anticipate when data collection will occur. The actual administration of the student questionnaire to the students will take a two hour block of time. However, you will need to arrive at least 15-30 minutes before a scheduled data collection so that you may set up. Please keep this in mind when providing your availability.

  2. Before the day of data collection we will send all needed materials (via Fed EX) to the actual site. When you arrive at the site on the day of data collection, please ask the specified person for the boxes of materials. In these boxes you will find the materials you will need. You will take the box(es) to the prearranged data collection area (i.e., classroom, auditorium, etc.) and begin setting up for administration of the student questionnaires.

The materials in the box(es) include:

    • Student Questionnaires: These are the actual questionnaires that the students will fill out over the two hour block of time.
    • Youth Leader Questionnaire: This is a brief questionnaire that the Youth Development Program leader completes about his/her youth group. A copy of this questionnaire is available for download at the bottom of this page.
    • Pencils: There will also be more than enough sharpened pencils for each child. If a child's pencil breaks or becomes dull during the administration of the questionnaire, please provide them with a new pencil.
    • Information: In one box you will find a copy of the Data Collection Protocol and information sheets about the site where you are collecting data, we well as a Data Collector Return Form (you must complete and return this form.)
    • Gifts for participating students: Students who complete the survey have a 1 in 10 chance to win a $10.00 Target gift card and will be entered into a larger drawing where he or she has a 1 in 40 chance to win a prize valued at $100.00. Those who participate in the study for more than one year, meaning that they are part of our longitudinal sample, will receive a $10 Target gift card when they complete the survey and will also be entered into the larger drawing.
    • Mailing Label: You will also find a prepaid Fed Ex mailing label(s). Once data collection is completed, you will send back all materials in the same box(es). All you have to do is put all materials in the box(es), tape them closed (using the tape provided), and affix the mailing label(s) to the outside of the box and drop it off at a Fed Ex drop off site. The box(es) will then be shipped to us at Tufts.

  3. To set up, you should first place the student questionnaires and pencils on the desks or tables before the children arrive. Make sure you spread them out so that the children are not sitting too close to one another. When the children arrive, instruct them to sit where there is a student questionnaire. Once the children are seated, you may begin the data collection process by referring to the Data Collection Protocol.

  4. After you have collected all the student questionnaires, please put all student questionnaires and materials relating to the study in the box(es). Double check the room to make sure that all materials have been collected (i.e., check the floor for possible inserts that may have fallen out, etc.). Please fill out the Data Collector Return Form and place it in the box. Locate the Fed Ex shipping label and tape that is provided. Tape up the boxes, affix the shipping label, and take the box(es) to the nearest Fed Ex shipping location.
