Graduate
Programs in Museum Studies and History

The Tufts Museum Studies Program provides qualified, post-baccalaureate students with professional training in the administration, preservation, and interpretation skills required for a career in the museum field. Among the various components of the program, the Department of History sponsors a course of study for students planning to work in historical museums.

The Certificate in Museum Studies requires four graduate-level courses and on-site internship. History M.A. candidates may take individual Museum Studies courses that fit into their program, or they may enroll in the combined History Masters of Arts/Museum Studies Certificate Program. Another alternative is enrollment in the history track of the Certificate Program without admission to the history M.A. program. Students interested in the Museum Studies courses or the Certificate Program should visit the website at http://ase.tufts.edu/museumStudies or contact the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies (617-627-3395).

Criteria for admissions to the combined M.A. in History/Certificate program are the same as those for the Master's Program. The requirements for a master's degree in history with a certificate in Museum Studies include:

  • The successful completion of eleven courses, including:
    • The historiography proseminar (History 200)
    • The Museum foundation course
    • One research course
    • Three Museum Studies elective courses
    • The Museum Studies internship

  • The preparation of one regional or comparative field of study, and examination in that field (see requirements in the preceding description of History M.A.). A thesis is optional.

  • The presentation of one research project drawn from course work to the Graduate History Roundtable.
