According to the International Ergonomics Association, human factors "is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data, and other methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance." It is a multi-disciplinary field with a staggering variety of applications; you likely use several products every day that were designed by human factors professionals. From keyboards to space shuttles, almost everything has considerations that can be improved by the work of someone trained in human factors.
