Research and experience tells us that academic achievement is enhanced by a healthy lifestyle. With information and skills, a student is more likely to make healthy decisions regarding his/her well-being particularly in the areas of nutrition, sleep, exercise, relationships, coping with stress and time management making him/her better poised to successfully attend to his/her studies.
Much of our jobs involve creating an environment and assisting students so that your child can make valuable contributions to our academic community and have a successful and productive future. Be assured that the Tufts community is ready to support your son/daughter in making the most of this/her Tufts experience.
One critical topic we address is alcohol and drug use. The misuse of alcohol on college campuses is a national concern. It is clearly linked to academic problems, public safety, and personal health problems. Tufts University does not condone underage drinking, nor does the university condone irresponsible use of alcohol by those who are of legal drinking age. And, in fact, it is important to note that excessive drinking is not the norm on college campuses. More than 60% of college students nationally report that they consume alcohol moderately or not at all. At Tufts, we emphasize that students can have a great time and an exceptional university experience without alcohol. However, we are compelled to provide support to those student that choose to drink and may do so with harmful consequence. Clearly, this is a serious issue that requires the attention of all members of the Tufts community in order to make our campus both safe and healthy. We ask for your assistance.
You may already have had discussions about substance use and healthy decision-making. Or, for a host of reasons, you may be hesitant to bring up the topic with each other. Simply opening up the conversation is a tremendous start. In fact, discussions at any point in time are valuable whether your student is just transitioning to college or is an upperclassman. Research tells us that the values and guidelines students learn from their parent(s) are influential in their decision- making leading often to safe and healthy choices.
