Tufts Alcohol & Drug Program - Mini-Grant Application

Health Education 617.627.5495

Social life is a critical component of the Tufts experience. For many students, alcohol/drug-free social options are a welcome break from many of the current social offerings already available. They are also one of a number of effective environmental strategies for reducing the misuse and abuse of alcohol on college campuses.

In an effort to increase the number of these events, the Alcohol and Drug Program of the Tufts Health Service is offering funding to student groups to support and enhance alcohol/drug-free social programming.

The purpose of these grants is to 1) expand venues for socializing in which participants health and safety and rights and property are protected and respected; 2) allow more students to assume an active role in the planning and management of social events; and, 3) increase opportunities for students to comply with state and federal laws about drinking and serving alcohol.

Application Form & Deadline - Applications are considered on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. Download the application here.

Funds - Grants will be awarded for up to $200. Groups applying for funds for a late night activity (after 11 p.m.) can apply for up to $300.

Grant Period - Funds awarded must be used during the current academic year with final requests for payment being submitted by the end of May.

Selection of Recipients - Awards will be made by members of the Tufts Alcohol and Drug Program and other staff of the Tufts Health Service, as needed. Plan on a 1-2 week period between submitting an application and getting a response. Awarding of grants will be based on the criteria outlined below.

Important Note - These funds are not intended to support existing events, but to promote the creation of new programs that are clearly intended to be alcohol & drug-free. Application needs to detail how your group will make participants aware that they are attending an event designed deliberately to provide a substance-free social option.

Mandatory Criteria for Usage of Funds & Marketing Guidelines:

  • Event(s) must be held on campus; Grant does not cover travel
  • Applicant can use the total dollars to cover one event or a series of events
  • TCU-funded groups and Residence Halls are eligible; awarded funds will be transferred directly to a TCU or Residence Life account
  • Groups are limited to one award per academic year
  • Funded events should be open to the entire campus community (justification for an exception must be detailed in grant application)
  • Event must be deliberately alcohol and drug-free with objectives and approach clearly stated in application
  • Priority will be given to applications that are innovative and contain even a minimal educational component related to alcohol and drug use (flyers, posters, brochures, messages, announcements, speaker, etc.)
  • Please supply copies of event marketing materials which must 1) identify funding source; 2) specify that this is an alcohol-free event (i.e. pre-gaming discouraged, etc.); and, 3) include a version of the Alcohol and Drug Program logo below:
