Margaret Higham, MD
Medical Director
Welcome! My name is Margaret Higham, and I am the Medical Director of Tufts Student Health Service. I went to the University of Michigan for an undergraduate degree in Psychology, and followed that with 4 years at Duke University in North Carolina for medical school. I did a pediatric residency at the Brown University program in Rhode Island. I then moved to Boston and spent 2 years in an Infectious Disease fellowship at Boston City Hospital, discovering that I hated research, and loved clinical care!
Prior to coming to Tufts in 2000, I spent 16 years as a primary care pediatrician in a private pediatric and adolescent practice in Medford, and was the Chief of the practice for part of that time. I love my position here at Tufts, where I both get to see patients, and oversee our clinical operations, helping solve problems and improving our services. Working in a college setting gives me a great appreciation for the challenges facing students as they make their journey into adulthood.
My medical interests are quite varied. I have special interests in LGBT healthcare, infectious diseases, medical management of eating disorders, appropriate antibiotic use, allergies, asthma and disability issues. I’ve been a strong advocate of routine screening for depression, which we started doing at Health Service in the fall of 2008 - something I am very proud of.
On a personal note, I have 2 young adult daughters. I enjoy exercise and the outdoors. You can often find me out on the trail or in the gym at 5:30am!
I look forward to meeting many of you at the Health Service, and would welcome calls or questions!
