A Brief overview
of Greek Life |
| |
Social Greek-lettered
fraternities and sororities have been a tradition at Tufts for
the past 150 years. These student organizations are typically
chapters of inter/national fraternities and sororities. They are
referred to as “Greek” because they use Greek letters as a
reflection of their noble ideals and principles adopted from
ancient Greeks. Tufts currently recognizes 12 social
Greek-letter fraternities and sororities, including nine men’s
fraternities, three women’s sororities, and one co-ed
independent fraternity. Several culturally-based city-wide Greek
organizations also have a presence at Tufts, bringing our total
membership to 23 chapters.
Greek organizations are very active on- and off-campus.
Approximately 11% (Fall) to 14% (Spring) of Tufts’ undergraduate
students choose to join a fraternity or sorority. Membership
enhances opportunities to meet new people, achieve academically,
learn leadership skills, and serve the broader Tufts community.
Alumni networking and mentoring helps illustrate the benefits of
life-long membership and giving back to the next generation of
Tufts students.
