Swahili

SWA 0001 Elementary Swahili I
Elementary Swahili I, essentials of Swahili grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and usage. Emphasis on active command of basic spoken and written Swahili. Exercises in pronunciation, grammar, conversation, reading, and writing supplemented by additional hour of conversation /lab drills. Course is offered during Fall Semester. Brown

SWA 0002 Elementary Swahili II
Essentials of Swahili grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and usage. Emphasis on active command of basic spoken and written Swahili. One additional weekly practice session in small groups with a T.A. to improve speaking and listening facilities and expand class material. Prerequisites: Swahili 1 or equivalent. Course is offered during Spring Semester.

SWA 0003 Intermediate Swahili I
Formal review of Swahili grammar and syntax with emphasis on the more complex aspects. Discussion of short readings in Swahili prose and poetry. Students also write and discuss their own short essays about the readings. Prerequisite: Swahili 2 or equivalent. Course is offered during Fall Semester. Brown

SWA 0004 Intermediate Swahili II
The continuation of the intermediate course with discussion of literary texts and news articles. Review of more coplex aspects of intermediate grammar. Written compositions, videos and internet assignments. Prerequisites: Swahili 3 or permission of instructor.

Guided independent study of approved topic. Variable credit.

SWA 0093 Independent Study
Guided independent study of approved topic. Variable credit.

SWA 0094 Independent Study
