Admission | Tufts-in-Tübingen | Tufts Campus | Requirements | Financial Aid | Applications | Student Voices

The German Program in the Department of German, Russian and Asian Languages and Literatures offers two courses of study leading to a master's degree in German. The M.A. in German requires two academic years and is designed to prepare students for doctoral work in German or to provide career enhancement for fields such as international business or law, media and communications, and library science. The M.A. in German with Teaching Certification, requiring two academic years plus one summer, is offered in conjunction with the Education Department and is designed to prepare highly qualified secondary school teachers.

Admission
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree with a major in German or equivalent preparation. They must identify on the application the program for which they are applying and indicate whether they will elect the Tübingen option. GRE General test scores are strongly recommended.

The Tufts-in-Tübingen Option
Both Programs offer the option of spending the first year of study abroad at the University of Tübingen under the guidance of the Tufts Resident Director. Students are fully integrated into the Eberhard-Karls-Universität and attend regular university lectures, seminars, and proseminars. The resident director will advise them on their programs of study, act as a liaison to the Tufts campus, and conduct an informal colloquium. The colloquium functions to acquaint them with contemporary and traditional aspects of German culture, and assists them to make full use of the wide range of cultural offerings available in Tübingen. It also serves as a forum for discussing works included on the Master's Program Reading List (see below). When circumstances permit, group trips to Berlin and to Jena/Weimar are undertaken.

About Tübingen
Almost everything in this small historic town is reminiscent of its past. Dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, the Old Aula, the Collegiate Church, and the Martinianum constitute the original university quarter. Since that time the town has developed a strong humanistic tradition associated with such luminaries as Schiller, Goethe, Hölderlin, Herder, and Humboldt.

At the University of Tübingen a series of Poetry Lectureships provides a forum for established writers and new talents alike ranging from Günter Grass and Amos Oz to Yoko Tawada.

It is not the University alone that makes Tübingen so attractive; the town itself is a walker's paradise: narrow streets, picturesque gables, stately old houses, the market square with its old town hall, and the Hölderlin Tower. This scenery can be viewed either from the castle, at once a fortress and an architectural work of art, or from the Philosophenweg across the Neckar. Beautiful hills and woods await the more serious hiker. When legs get tired, one of the many cafes or "Kneipen" will invite the weary to rest and enjoy some local specialties. For brain food there are numerous bookstores, especially the Antiquariate specializing in rare and used books. Tübingen's location in Southern Germany affords easy access to larger urban centers in both Germany and France.

Study on the Tufts Campus
Students in both programs must spend the second year in residence on the Tufts campus in Medford. There they will enroll for two courses each semester and participate in a Graduate Colloquium organized in conjunction with the faculty. The purpose of the colloquium is to supplement course work in preparation for the comprehensive written and oral examinations.

Students participating in the MA with Teaching Licensure will receive the necessary preparation through additional courses offered by the Education Department and the German Program. They will do their practice teaching in area schools supervised by German Department faculty. An additional summer will be needed to complete the requirements for that degree.

Besides the opportunity to participate in the rich cultural life of Boston, students may avail themselves of a large number of extracurricular activities and events sponsored by the German Program, such as readings by German authors, guest lectures, immersion weekends in New Hampshire, an active undergraduate German House, a Filmabend, and a weekly Kaffeestunde open to German speakers from the Tufts international community.

About the Tufts Campus & Surrounding Areas
From the vantage point of a hill on the beautifully landscaped Medford campus of Tufts University an unparalleled cultural and geographical vista unfolds. Not only is the campus just minutes away by foot or shuttle from the many coffee shops, cafes, bakeries, restaurants, or the marvelous used-books store and funky cinema of Davis Square, but with public transportation, the entire metropolitan Boston/Cambridge community is easily accessible. Other renowned universities and colleges, as well as many libraries, theaters, museums, concert halls, and cinemas make up a pleasant and exciting cultural environment.

On short or longer breaks from study, any number of New England sites await exploration. Historic Walden Pond is just thirty minutes away, the beaches of the North shore are but an hour's ride. Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Newport and Jamestown in Rhode Island, the fall foliage and winter slopes of the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine: all are just two hours away.

Student Voices

— Karel Scott (MA 2001)

Students who choose to remain on the Medford campus take part in all the advantages of a small, closely-knit department: personalized education plans, flexibility of studies, creative programs - such as the Brown School Project, and a close working relationship with dynamic and innovative professors, who are closely involved with their students' professional preparation and development.

— Jere Armen (MA 2002)
