One with One Program

One with One is a program sponsored by the Program in Chinese and TCSSA (Tufts Chinese Students and Scholars Association). Its goal is to promote and facilitate both linguistic and cultural exchanges between American and Chinese students. The Program matches up American students in the Chinese Program with students/scholars from China, who would like to improve their language skills, learn more about each other’s cultures and develop friendship.

Students who are interested in the One with One Program should contact Dr. Mingquan Wang, coordinator for the Program in Chinese and the One with One Program at 617-627-2579 (312 Olin Center). An application will need to be filled out and Dr. Wang will notify applicants after a match is made.

After the notification, partners are expected to contact each other by e-mail or phone to set up an initial meeting. Once you meet, you and your partner will set up a regular meeting time (perhaps one hour each week during the academic year). The place you meet is up to you and your partner. You may find a good place on campus to talk over lunch, you may want to attend an activity together, or you may want to find a quiet place and help each other with your homework.

Although the Program in Chinese and TCSSA may organize activities to bring all the partners together, the One with One Program is an informal program without a lot of regularly scheduled activities and the success of the program depends mostly on the commitment and active participation by the participants in the program. Therefore we ask that all participants in the program make a commitment to the program and make an earnest effort to make the One with One Program a success.

Participation in the One with One Program is on an academic year basis, and may be renewed upon mutual agreement by both partners each year. Should you and/or your partner decide after a few meetings or at the end of each semester that you no longer can meet (e.g. due to scheduling difficulties) or feel that you are not compatible as partners in the One with One Program, please contact Dr. Wang for a new match.

We thank you for your participation in the One with One Program and encourage you to share your experience with us. Any suggestions and comments regarding the Program will be appreciated.
