A continuation of Elementary Modern Standard Arabic. Arabic grammar, reading and discussion of selected texts. Prerequisites: Arabic 1, 2.

ARB 0055/ILVS 55 Cultural History of the Modern Middle East
This lecture-based introductory survey course introduces students to the major trends and developments in cultural activities (music, cinema, literature and the fine arts) across the Arab world, Turkey, Iran and Israel from the nineteenth century to the present day. Following each of these fields of artistic expression, this course presents a broad overview of how artists, writers, musicians and others both influenced and reflected political and social changes in their societies. Students will not only learn about the major cultural figures of these societies, but also will come to understand the history of the region in a rich and multifaceted way. Themes examined will include: innovation and reform, political resistance, revolutionary ideologies, the rural-urban divide, transformations of gender roles, the rise of youth cultures, new religious movements, and reactions to consumerism and globalization.

ARB 0057/ILVS 87 Arab and Middle Eastern Cinemas
This course presents an overview of the social role of cinema the Arab world and the broader Middle East (Iran, Turkey, Israel, etc), by presenting a historical perspective on the development and expansion of cinema in these parts of the world, as well as by presenting several thematic windows through which the relationship of cinema to these societies is examined.

ARB 0063 Arabian Nights
A survey of the composition, structure, history, and importance of the Arabian Nights, the famous tales narrated by Shahrazad during 1001 nights, with selected reading of the most important tales. The dissemination of the tales and their transmission to other regions of the world including their impact on other cultures as reflected in writing, art, and film.

ARB 0065/ILVS 85 Travel Literature: the Arab and Muslim World
A survey of literature relating to travel writing as a literary genre in the Arab and broader Muslim worlds. An overview of travel writing as a literary form of expression within these cultural contexts' analysis of how travel literature expresses inquisitiveness at the encounter with a different culture; examines how the traveler-writer endeavors to decipher this different culture in the light of her or his own experience and knowledge. Comparison of travel writing from these regions to the genre in other cultural contexts. Issues such as tolerance/intolerance, transience/permanence, and universal/particular as they relate to the literary genres of travel writing in primary and secondary readings. In English

ARB 0155/ILVS 101 Postcolonial Cinemas
This course offers an overview of the intersection between world cinema and the conditions of colonialism and postcoloniality. Beginning with readings and viewings on representations of the non-Western world in early cinema, the course will then move to examine the development of cinemas of resistance and in particular the articulation of Third Cinema in the context of the Cold War. The second half of the course will examine the emergence of postcolonial themes in cinema, examining the treatment of questions such gender and identity, social subalterns, engaging with orientalism, diaspora identity and a range of other issues. Central to the course will be the question: what aesthetic innovations in cinema may be related to the engagement with postcolonial issues?
