Scholarships
Scholarships of $500–$2000 are awarded each summer based on academic merit,
financial need, and length of program. Factors taken into consideration for
scholarship awards include G.P.A., civic-mindedness, travel experience, and the
scholarship essay. Tufts students will be asked in for a short interview.
Scholarships are available only to current Tufts University students and to
qualified high school students applying to the Tufts Summit program. Priority is
given to students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA who receive financial aid.
To be considered, students must submit a
Scholarship Application Form along with the completed program
Registration Form, before February 5, 2010 for Tufts in Talloires, before March
12, 2010 for Tufts Summit, and before April 2, 2010 for Tufts in Annecy.
Scholarship recipients will be notified before respective program registration
deadlines.
Types of Scholarships
MacJannet Scholarship
The MacJannet Scholarships are awarded annually to promote international
understanding through summer study abroad. These scholarships are named in honor
of Donald and Charlotte MacJannet, an American couple who made the Tufts Summer
Programs in Talloires possible by donating the building and grounds which now
comprise Tufts’ campus in the French Alps. Students awarded MacJannet
Scholarships are required to work several hours per week during the Tufts in
Talloires program by assisting with program administration or with
community-service projects.
Seymour Simches Scholarship
The Simches Scholarship is named after Professor Seymour Simches, the first
director of the Talloires Program, and is awarded to a Tufts student who
displays a strong desire to improve his/her French by participating in the Tufts
in Annecy program.
Kaufman Scholarship
The Kaufman scholarships are awarded annually to deserving young students chosen
to participate in the Tufts Summit program in Talloires. These scholarships are
named in honor of Richard and Elaine Kaufman (J46), who created an endowed fund
to support and promote international understanding by encouraging American
students to study and live with French families.
Other Forms of Financial
Aid
Eligible students may receive federal financial aid when participating in
approved study abroad programs. Summer Programs in the French Alps qualify since
credit is awarded directly by Tufts University. Those federal aid programs that
students may use include the Pell Grant, Perkins Loan and Family Loans
(unsubsidized Stafford, subsidized Stafford, and PLUS). For more information,
consult your college financial aid officer.
About Passports and Visas
U.S. Citizens:
You must have a valid passport that does not expire before your
anticipated return date. If you need to apply or renew, do so as soon as
possible or at least eight weeks before departure. For information and forms,
contact the main branch of your local post office or a Federal Passport Agency.
Boston’s Passport Agency can be reached at 617-565-6990. Unless you intend to
stay in France for more than three months, you will not need a visa.
Citizens of other countries:
Most program participants arrive via Geneva and
travel to Switzerland at least once, so you must check visa requirements at both
the French and Swiss consulates nearest you at least eight weeks before
departure. You can reach the French Consulate at
www.consulfrance-boston.org and the Swiss Consulate at
www.swissemb.org.
Payments
An initial nonrefundable registration fee of $75 must accompany each registration.
A nonrefundable deposit of $500 to reserve your place is due by the program registration
deadline for Tufts in Talloires and Tufts in Annecy. For Tufts Summit, the $500 deposit
is due once you are notified of acceptance. The balance of fees will be billed via the
Tufts Bursar’s Office and is due upon receipt. All fees must be received by the Tufts
Bursar by the stated Bursar deadlines in order for students to participate in any of
the European Center programs. Checks for the registration fee and the deposit should
be made payable to Tufts University and mailed directly to:

the $500 nonrefundable deposit.

program fee
- On or after the first day of the program: no refunds are possible
