TUFTS UNIVERSITY – Arts, Sciences & Engineering
Application for Faculty Research
GRANTS-IN-AID, 2007-2008 (GIA)
(Under $1,500)

Application is open to any full-time member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Engineering and shall be made by filling out a form available upon request from the Office of the Dean, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Ballou Hall, extension 73106. Priority is given to full-time, tenured and tenure track faculty. Decisions will be based on promise, productivity and funding history. These grants are limited to one per year and one per project. GIA’s are typically used as seed money or to cover extra expenses related to a research project. They are not intended to be used to sustain research projects over a long period of time. (To apply for a larger amount, request the form for FRF Awards)

A completed copy of the application form (collated but not stapled) may be submitted to FRAC (c/o Office of the Dean, GSAS) at any time between September 5, 2007 and May 14, 2008 (or until funds are expended.) Applications will be reviewed within a month of submission.

Money is not available for direct payment to a faculty member, except in the case of approved reimbursement of prior expenses.

All money is for the express purpose of promoting faculty research. Application may be made to cover:

1. Supplies, material, equipment, if not possible to charge to a department. Title to equipment items is retained by the University.

2. Salary of research assistant. The nature of the assistant's involvement in the project should be explained in the application. The work of a graduate research assistant must be integral to the research of the faculty member.

3. Travel expenses in connection with research. Requests for travel expenses must include a justification of the need to travel and a day-to-day or week-to-week schedule of specific research plans, in addition to the project proposal. Priority will be given to requests to do on-site research where the facilities at the site are unique.

Faculty Research Awards are not intended to replace department funds. Note that the National Endowment for the Humanities is one agency that awards summer stipends that may include funds for travel to a research collection, library, and museum or archive in the United States or abroad.

FRAC does not fund requests to deliver papers or participate in international or domestic conferences. (Note that for humanists, who are members of a constituent society, the American Council of Learned Societies administers some grants for travel to scholarly meetings).

4. Publications. The Committee will consider granting part of the publication expenses for refereed books or articles, or page charges imposed by reputable publishers. The need for this subsidy must be well substantiated by the applicant.

The text of the proposal should be no more that 1000 words long (the equivalent of two single-spaced pages) and should be written in language comprehensible to colleagues in other disciplines. Turgid prose, excessive jargon, etc. -- all may reduce the ability of committee members in other disciplines to comprehend the importance of the proposal. The committee will not seek clarification -- the request will be denied. The applicant should describe as specifically as possible the work to be done, the methods to be used, and the intended use of grant money. Progress made with prior FRAC funding should be noted, if applicable.

Applications shall also include:

  • A curriculum vitae, listing the applicant's publication and presentation record. An abbreviated CV is acceptable, showing only recent and/or relevant publications.
  • Details of FRAC and other funding in the past two years, with dates.
  • Original receipts for prior expenditures for which reimbursement is sought.
If a project is approved for funding, the applicant will be notified of the amount of the sum awarded. Awards will be disbursed directly from the Faculty Research Award Account after the appropriate forms are filed with the Budget and Fiscal Officer for Arts and Sciences, Ballou Hall (third floor), extension 73269. Applicants should not expect feedback from the Committee on their proposals.

Assistance from the University should be acknowledged in any publication that results from FRAC funding.
