FACULTY RESEARCH FUND AWARD, 2007-2008 (for grants between $1,500 and $5,000)* |

Application is open to any full-time member of the Faculty of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering and shall be made by filling out a form available upon request from the Office of the Dean, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Ballou Hall, extension 73106. Priority is given to full-time tenured or tenure track faculty. A. Application Form: A completed copy of the application form (collated but not stapled) may be submitted to FRAC (c/o Office of the Dean, GSAS) by one of the following deadline dates: 1. September 28, 2007 or 2. January 25, 2008 *NOTE: To apply for a smaller amount, ask for a "Grant-in-Aid" or “GIA” application form. B. Proposal: The text should be no more than 1000 words long and should be written in language comprehensible to colleagues in other disciplines. The applicant should describe as specifically as possible the work to be done and the methods to be used. C. References: Applicants should arrange for one letter from a tenured member of his or her department who is not a collaborator on the project but can assess the merit and feasibility of the project. The letter should be sent directly to FRAC c/o Office of the Dean, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. D. Itemized budget: A justification for each item is a required part of the application. Money is not available for direct payment to a faculty member. All money is for the express purpose of promoting faculty research. Application may be made to cover: 1. Supplies, material, equipment, if not possible to charge to a department. Title to equipment is retained by the University. 2. Salary of research assistant. The nature of the assistant's involvement in the project should be explained in the application. The work of a graduate research assistant must be integral to the research of the faculty member. The application should also specify in what ways the research project will benefit the student involved. 3. Travel expenses in connection with research. Requests for travel expenses must include a justification of the need to travel and a day-to-day or week-to-week schedule of specific research plans, in addition to the project proposal. Priority will be given to requests to do on-site research where the facilities at the site are unique. Faculty Research Awards are not intended to replace department funds. FRAC does not fund requests to deliver papers or participate in international or domestic conferences. (Notes: The National Endowment for the Humanities is one agency that awards summer stipends that may include funds for travel to a research collection, library, museum or archive in the United States or abroad. For humanists who are members of a constituent society, the American Council of Learned Societies administers some grants for travel to scholarly meetings). 4. Publications. The Committee will consider granting part of the publication expenses for books or page charges imposed by reputable publishers. The need for this subsidy must be well substantiated by the applicant. In addition, each applicant shall provide: E. A description of previous funding by this committee during the last five years (year, amount, purpose). Include all reports you have sent to the Committee on your use of FRAC grants made in the previous two academic years. F. A description of any funds requested or received from other sources for this project. (Please be specific; if it is not feasible to request funds from other sources, state reason.) Copies of all reports sent in the last three years to FRAC on use of FRAC funds. G. A curriculum vitae including an itemized list of all other current research funding. Include your expected ICR, if any. If a project is approved for funding, the applicant will be notified of the amount of the sum awarded. Awards will be disbursed directly from the Faculty Research Award Account after the appropriate forms are filed with the Budget and Fiscal Officer for Arts and Sciences, Ballou Hall (Third Floor), extension 73269. Applicants should not expect feedback from the Committee on their proposals. Assistance from the University should be acknowledged in any publication that results from FRAC funding. A ONE-PAGE FINAL REPORT must be submitted to the Committee upon completion of the project, summarizing the work accomplished. The committee may refuse further funding to those who have received funds but have not reported in timely fashion on the use of those funds.
