SCHOOL OF ARTS & SCIENCES

ANTHROPOLOGY:
Lecturer, Spring 2010. Tufts University Department of Anthropology is seeking qualified applicants to teach one course, Biological Anthropology (Anthropology 40), in Spring 2010, enrollment 150-200 students. Lecture, no sections, but Teaching Assistants are used for grading and office hours. This introductory course applies evolutionary perspectives to basic concepts of human biology -- including Mendelian and population genetics, human growth and adaptation, primates, and human paleontology – and a range of contemporary problems such as emergent diseases, urbanization, and global warming. The proportion devoted to each topic will depend on specialization of the instructor. Teaching experience required. Applicants must have at least ABD standing in Anthropology.

Biology 46: Cell Biology
Basic concepts of cellular organization, function, regulation. Emphasis on molecular/biochemical approach to fundamentals of bioenergetics; plasma membrane functions such as transport, secretion, and signal transduction; organelle function and biogenesis; cell growth and division. The syllabus used in the Spring 2008 semester can be found here. The course is normally offered Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30-11:45 a.m. Enrollment will not exceed 90 students.

Biology 52: Experiments in Cell Biology
The field of Cell Biology focuses on examining cells and the behaviors they perform. This course will introduce students to the investigation of several laboratory problems using standard techniques of cell biology. Emphasis on subcellular fractionation, microscopy, cell culture, and chromatography. One laboratory session per week plus one discussion period. The syllabus used in the Spring 2008 semester can be found here. The course is offered Thursdays 1:00-5:00 p.m. Enrollments will not exceed 12 students.

Biology 152: Biochemistry and Cellular Metabolism
An in-depth examination of the structure and function of biomolecules: chemical and physical properties of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids; enzyme kinetics and mechanisms; metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids and the metabolic relationships of organ systems. The syllabus used in the Spring 2009 semester can be found here. The course is normally offered Mondays 9:30-10:20 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:30-11:20 a.m. Enrollment will not exceed 150 students.

EDUCATION:
Tufts University Department of Education seeks a qualified candidate to teach Curriculum Development for Museum - School Collaborations during Spring 2010. Masters degree preferred and experience in college-level teaching required. The course will engage Museum Studies students in exploring the theories, planning, and implementation of museum curricula that support education programs for K-12 students. The candidate will have museum teaching experience, and be knowledgeable about learning theory, curriculum development, working with teachers, and state curriculum frameworks pertinent to museums of all types. EDUCATION:
Tufts University Department of Education seeks qualified candidates to teach the course ED 274: Methods of School Psychology Research to students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences’ School Psychology Program during the Spring term of 2010. Doctorate in School Psychology and successful university teaching experience are preferred.

This course is an introduction to the research methods employed in conducting and understanding educational and psychological research. Topics will cover quantitative and qualitative methods. The successful candidate should have broad familiarity with the statistical knowledge necessary for the daily practice of school psychology such as: single subject and small group research designs, data-based decision making, progress monitoring, and program evaluation.

Social and economic organization of the mass media of communication. Effects on content. Themes of mass culture. Social composition of the audience. Effects of the media on the audience. Topics such as television, films, the press, books, magazines, and advertising.

Sociology 149C: Sociology of Culture
Sociological investigation of culture, broadly defined to include the meanings of cultural objects such as religious symbols, consumer goods, and art, as well more abstract meanings and values such as racial identity, love, and nationalism. Classical and contemporary theories of the sources and impact of cultural meanings. Possible applications of the theories include “culture wars,” social stratification, immigrant communities, and various subcultures.

URBAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AND PLANNING:
Part-time Lecturer, Financial Analysis and Management, Spring 2010 (graduate course). The Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning seeks a qualified candidate to teach Financial Analysis and Management during the Spring term of 2010. A Masters degree and some previous experience in college-level teaching is required. This course is designed to teach the tools and terminology needed by staff of public and nonprofit organizations to effectively manage financial resources. Emphasis on how to create tools and systems needed to analyze fiscal data and how to use the data to answer fundamental questions facing financial managers. Topics include budgeting, construction of cash flow projections, reading and analyzing financial statements, internal and external reporting requirements, internal controls, and borrowing and investment decisions. Faculty members are hired as part-time visiting lecturers for the given session that they will teach.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING:
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Tufts University invites applications for a part-time lecturer position.  This is a non-tenure-track position with responsibilities for classroom teaching.  We seek outstanding candidates in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or related areas. The successful candidate will teach an interdisciplinary course in Fall 2009 entitled “Analytical Tools for Biomedical Engineering.”   The course covers statistical methods of data analysis with emphasis upon biomedical applications.  Probability, random variables, covariance and correlation, normal distribution, samples, error analysis and propagation of errors, statistical tests, method of least squares, linear regression, independent component analysis, principal component analysis, and noise reduction in biomedical data.  Candidates should possess an earned doctorate in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; and demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching.

CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking part-time lecturers for two courses to be offered in the Fall 2009 semester: (1) Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics) and (2) Soil Mechanics. The Mechanics course is taught to sophomore Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, and Mechanical engineering students as part of our ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees. The Soil Mechanics course is a required course, typically taken by students pursuing an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering. Instructors wanted for the Spring 2010 semester to teach small, discussion-based courses that promote active learning and engage Tufts undergraduates in an exploration of ideas and experiences shaping the world today. Classes that offer critical contexts for thinking about cultural studies, current affairs, technology, film, television, law, social issues, world religions, advertising and marketing, business, healthcare, and ethics have all been well received. Twenty courses will be chosen from a very competitive pool. Classes meet in the evening, will begin Thursday, January 21, 2010, and will run for thirteen weeks.
