SCHOOL OF ARTS & SCIENCES

ANTHROPOLOGY:
Tufts University Department of Anthropology is seeking qualified applicants to teach one course, After Violence: Truth, Justice, and Social Repair (Anth 140), in Fall 2008. This course will explore how people and states repair lives, rebuild social communities, establish accountability, and promote justice and redress after mass violence and atrocities. BIOLOGY:
Temporary, part-time Lecturer position in Molecular Biology. The Department of Biology invites applications for a position teaching the following course in Summer 2008:

Biology 105B Molecular Biology. Gene structure and function in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, fundamentals of recombinant DNA technology. Mechanisms of DNA replication, recombination, transcription, and protein synthesis are emphasized. Advanced topics including gene expression during cell differentiation, retroviral infection, and regulation of cell proliferation are based on current literature. Prerequisite: General Genetics. The syllabus used in the spring semester can be found here. The course will be given the second summer session, July 1 – August 7, 2008, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Enrollment will be 10 to 15 students.

CHEMISTRY:
Tufts University seeks a part-time lecturer to fill leave replacement positions in physical chemistry. The successful applicant will teach graduate-level quantum mechanics (CHEM 133) in the Fall 2008 semester, with the possibility of additional teaching responsibilities in the undergraduate physical chemistry lab. DRAMA AND DANCE:
The Department of Drama and Dance invites applicants for a position as a Lecturer in Drama with a specialization in Costume Design for the Fall semester. This is a one-semester, part-time appointment to replace someone who is on leave. The position will begin on 25 August 2008 and will run until the semester ends in December. Qualifications: MFA in Costume Design with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. Demonstrated ability, teaching and/or professional experience in costume design and technology, with some experience in hair and makeup design. Ability to supervise and/or mentor student costume designers, excellent communication skills; collaborative approach to theatre. Responsibilities: Teach one course in costume design during the 2008 Fall semester. Supervise student costume designer for Fall departmental major production. Classes begin on 2 September 2008. Qualifications: MFA in Playwriting with a strong record of published, award-winning, professionally-produced work. ECONOMICS:

EDUCATION:
The Department of Education at Tufts University seeks qualified candidates to teach the course, "Class, Race, and Gender in the History of U.S. Education," during the Summer term and the Fall term of 2008. Doctorate and previous university teaching experience in the area of multicultural education, critical race theory, or U.S. social history preferred. This course explores the development of the public schools in relation to changes in the U.S. economy, the growth of organized state structures, and racial and gender ideologies. It explores the ways different groups have struggled to gain access to a meaningful education, considering the varying perspectives and experiences of people of color and white women across class, immigrant status, and ethnicity.

The course is open to advanced undergraduates and graduate students. The course will be offered second Summer session, July 1-August 8, 2008 on Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:00-8:30 p.m.; and during the Fall 2008 term on Tuesdays from 4:30-7:15 p.m.

EDUCATION/VISUAL AND CRITICAL STUDIES:
Program Description: The Art Education Program of Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is a teacher education program committed to multicultural issues in public schools. It prepares students for art teacher licensure endorsed by the Massachusetts Department of Education. The BFA-AE program is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach Art Education & Human Development with Multicultural Perspectives in Fall 2008. The lecturer will also be asked to attend, if possible, approximately three Art Education faculty meetings per semester.

Course Description: This course considers human development from early childhood through adolescence through the lens of the artist-teacher. Readings, seminar activities and field visits to PreK-12 classrooms will focus on the role of art in human development and learning. Special attention is paid to how art teachers engage youth in studying, critiquing and making visual culture while considering the stages of human development. Field experiences include brief observations of a range of public school art classrooms and other community art making settings. Introductions to art curriculum development, seminar reflections and classroom discourse are cultivated to respond to student observations about art and human development of learners in multicultural settings. The class will meet Tuesday evenings from 5:30 - 8:30 pm, Fall semester 2008.

Education background/experience: Doctoral or Masters Degree in Art Education or related field required. Teaching experience in higher education, as well as K-12 education, preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise and knowledge in art education with attention to multicultural issues, current theory and practice of student engagement and development, and K-12 art classroom pedagogy.

URBAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AND PLANNING:

VISUAL AND CRITICAL STUDIES:
The Department of Visual and Critical Studies of Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, announces a search for a Lecturer to teach a total of two courses in one or two semesters for the academic year 2008-09. Our department seeks a scholar with demonstrated expertise in non-Western area(s) such as African, African Diaspora, Oceanian, Islamic, Pre-Columbian, and/or Colonial Latin American visual culture.

Experience and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching are strongly desired. Critical and theoretical perspectives on visual art and cultural studies are defining aspects of this interdisciplinary department. Candidates must have the ability to teach survey and smaller upper-level courses in their non-Western field of expertise. We are seeking a colleague who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic and artistic community. Hence, the desire to teach in an art school setting and to interact with studio courses is an essential component of this appointment. Requirements: Ph.D. or ABD in art history required.

ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tufts University is conducting an ongoing search for highly-qualified, enthusiastic part-time lecturers. We invite applications from individuals who are interested in teaching courses listed in the ECE course offerings. This includes local industry experts who are interested in teaching advanced evening classes in cutting-edge new areas. Strong preference is given to applicants with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or an appropriately related field.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University seeks applications for a Lecturer (part-time) commencing in Fall of 2008. Specific areas of interest include usability engineering, human-computer interaction, and systems design. A graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Psychology, or a related discipline is required. A PhD is preferred. The candidate is expected to teach a maximum of one course per semester. The exceptional candidate will have both teaching experience and relevant industrial experience in usability engineering practice. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to teach effectively are required.

EXPERIMENTAL COLLEGE

EXPERIMENTAL COLLEGE:
Instructors wanted for Fall 2008 to teach small, discussion-based courses that promote active learning and engage Tufts undergraduates in an exploration of ideas and experiences shaping the world today. Classes that offer critical contexts for thinking about popular culture, current affairs, technology, film, television, law, social issues, world religions, advertising and marketing, business, healthcare, and ethics have all been well received. Twenty courses will be chosen from a very competitive pool. Classes meet in the evening, will begin Tuesday, September 2, 2008, and will run for thirteen weeks.
