Candidates are expected to hold a doctoral degree in engineering, applied science or medicine.  We are particularly interested in individuals conducting interdisciplinary research at the interface between life sciences and engineering in areas such as environmental microbiology, transmission pathways of infectious diseases, gene-environment interactions, and environmental toxicology. The successful candidate will join an Environmental Health Program that is positioned at the junction between engineering and public health.  Principal responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate teaching, establishment of a strong externally-funded research program, and development of active collaborations with research partners, creating synergy both inside and outside Tufts University.   The ideal candidate will have research interests that complement existing departmental strengths, including waterborne and water-related pathogens, contaminant fate and transport, air pollution monitoring, biostatistics, epidemiology, and neurotoxicology, and that provide opportunities for collaboration with faculty in the Schools of Engineering and Arts and Sciences, as well as the Schools of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dental Medicine, Nutrition Science and Policy, and the Fletcher School.

The mission of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is to educate students to become leaders in the solution of important societal problems of the 21st century. Technically rigorous but broad in scope, our programs focus on the interactions between the natural and built environments.  Tufts has a unique set of schools that are internationally recognized and known for interdisciplinary collaborations, as exemplified by the graduate program in Water: Systems, Science and Society and the IGERT program in "Water Diplomacy".  Located only six miles from the historic Boston downtown area, faculty members on the Tufts Medford/Somerville campus have extensive opportunities for academic collaboration and participation in the rich intellectual life of the Boston area.

Candidates should submit an application letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching objectives, and contact information for three references to Dr. David M. Gute, Search Committee Chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 200 College Avenue, 113 Anderson Hall, Tufts University, Medford, MA 02155 or via email to ceefacsearch@tufts.edu.  Review of applications will begin on April 1, 2011 and will continue until the position is filled. The start date is anticipated to be between January and September 2012. Tufts University is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity
