Russian Language & Literature

Language Skills:

Given the necessity of communicating in a Russian language environment, be it of a practical or professional nature, the student will be able to participate in such a discussion, articulating his or her point of view and questioning that of another competently and accurately, while understanding and displaying proper norms of language behavior and courtesy. The student will be able to contribute to a variety of topics, ranging from the personal and immediate to the more abstract and hypothetical.

Given a situation that necessitates the understanding of Russian, the student will be able to competently handle a range of texts, whether of a socio-professional stratum (e.g., newspaper article) or of a more colloquial one (e.g., a film dialogue), and be able to summarize and describe the contents.

Cultural Knowledge:

Given the need to comment on a literary, cultural or related socio-artistic topic in the Russian field, the student will be able to articulate a position or opinion well-versed in the necessary context and be able to develop and/or defend it if necessary. The student will be able to relate the significance of a smaller topic (an individual work or writer) to larger historical-cultural conditions and themes. The student will also be able to describe and give relevant examples of major trends and orientations in Russian culture.

Given the need to comment on Russian culture in general, the student will be able to speak of its renowned classics, whether or literature or film, and articulate from a more inside perspective distinctive traits and features that make such works unique but also why their status is recognized as such from a global perspective.

In both fields, the student will demonstrate a sophisticated awareness and understanding of cultural differences, as well as a high level of cultural literacy, allowing him or her to function effectively and adequately in a wide range of situational contexts, whether of a professional or personal need.

Assessment:

  • to be achieved in language domain through successful completion of upper/advanced levels
  • to be achieved in culture domain through seminar and/or senior thesis work (at least one of which is required)
