DESCRIPTION AND WORKLOAD

The function of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Policy and Programs Committee (P&P) is to consider, approve and report to the faculty on the adoption, modification, and abrogation of courses, curricula and faculty policies as they relate to graduate students. It reviews proposals from faculty members, departments, and programs to add, change, or delete individual courses and graduate degree requirements, and it also reviews proposals for new graduate degree programs as well as relevant issues regarding academic policies, enrollment standing, time limitation, etc.

The committee consists of the graduate advisor or director from each arts and sciences department with a graduate program, the dean of the graduate school, and a representative from Tisch Library, the Office of Graduate Resources and Development (GRAD), and one student representative from each of the following categories, appointed by the Graduate Student Council: a Ph.D. program, an academic master's program, and a professional master's program. Membership corresponds to these departmental assignments and rotates accordingly.

Committee members attend meetings seven to eight times during the academic year, typically on Fridays from 12:00 - 1:20 PM. Members are asked to review materials that are sent with the agenda prior to each meeting. Members are asked to bring issues from their department to the committee and also report back to their department colleagues on information learned at meetings. Items to be presented to the committee for discussion and vote should be submitted to the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences one week prior to the meeting. A Request for Action form should be sent along with the required documentation. This committee is not appropriate for tenure-track faculty members.
