DESCRIPTION AND WORKLOAD

The School of Engineering Curriculum Committee (SOECC) is charged with maintaining the health and wellbeing of the curricula offered by the School of Engineering (SOE). In practice, this entails insuring that the Bulletin of Tufts University (the Bulletin) contains accurate, definitive, unambiguous, and concise information on all engineering courses and programs. SOE programs and courses arise from the initiative of the faculty of the school, while the SOECC chair speaks for the School of Engineering in communicating approved changes to the registrar for recording in the Bulletin. Thus the SOECC acts as a gatekeeper between the faculty of engineering and the registrar.

The function of the School of Engineering Curriculum Committee (SOECC) is to serve as a liaison between the Faculty of Engineering and the registrar's office, acting on change requests for both undergraduate programs and specific course descriptions. Changes in graduate programs are handled instead by the School of Engineering Graduate Studies Committee.

Committee members include representatives from each engineering department appointed by the respective department chair. Membership also includes representatives of specific departments in the School of Arts and Sciences that serve engineering interests, including faculty members from math, physics, and chemistry, as well as a representative from the social sciences or humanities. The arts and sciences representatives may be appointed by the Committee on Committees. There is also a student representative, typically appointed by the TCU Senate. Any full-time voting-eligible faculty member of the School of Engineering may serve as a representative for engineering. Any fulltime voting-eligible faculty member of the School of Arts and Sciences may serve as a representative for arts and sciences. The typical term of appointment is six years, though repeat terms are common at departmental discretion.

The committee meets at minimum once per month in the fall and spring semesters, typically two weeks before the next scheduled School of Engineering faculty meeting that will process the results of committee deliberations. This committee is appropriate for tenure-track faculty members.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Proxy Policy
It is extremely important that every Engineering department be represented at each committee meeting, whether by the appointed departmental representative or a proxy. In the event that an appointed representative cannot attend a committee meeting, the representative is encouraged to recruit another department member to attend as a temporary department representative. In that case, please inform the committee chair of the proxy choice. Proxy representatives have voting responsibilities.

Open Attendance Policy
Unless otherwise noted, committee meetings are open to all voting faculty in Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, although only committee members can vote. Faculty responsible for specific change requests are especially encouraged to attend the meeting at which their request is considered.

Submissions to the Curriculum Committee
The SOECC acts on requests to do the following:

  • Create or modify an undergraduate or graduate course (number, title, description) to be listed in the Bulletin.
  • Create or modify an undergraduate program (title, description), or SOE undergraduate programs as a whole, that will appear in the Bulletin.
The Engineering Graduate Committee fields requests to modify graduate engineering programs.

Guidelines and Procedures for Submitting Requests

Forms and Documentation
The following is a downloadable form for submitting requests to the Curriculum Committee and, for convenience, the form for cross-listing a course, which should be routed to the assistant registrar. Refer to the guidelines above regarding procedures, approvals, and other protocols for submitting a request.
