Faculty Research Awards

The Committee on Faculty Research Awards is pleased to announce grants to support faculty research in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering during the 2017-2018 academic year. Below is a brief description of each award and their application deadlines. To receive more information and/or to download application forms, simply click on the appropriate award type.

All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online. Letters, CVs and other supporting documents should be sent as directed in the attached application form. If you have questions please send an email to frac@tufts.edu.

YOUR APPLICATION IS MORE LIKELY TO BE SUCCESSFUL IF YOU FOLLOW THIS ADVICE:
  1. Keep in mind that your application will be read by people across the disciplines in Arts & Sciences and in Engineering. Explain the what, why, and how of your research project clearly and concisely so that people outside your field can understand it.
  2. Avoid technical or specialized language.
  3. Explain how the grant money will be spent (in addition to your attached budget).
  4. Do not cut and paste from another grant proposal.
  5. If the grant is to support a student, explain how the student's work will contribute directly to your own research project.

GIA - Grants-In-Aid - Under $2,000
Eligibility: Tenure-stream faculty members and full-time Professors of the Practice in Arts, Sciences and Engineering.
This award is typically used as seed money or to cover extra expenses related to a research project.
Deadlines: Monday, October 2, 2017; Monday, November 20, 2017; Monday, January 8, 2018; Tuesday, February 20, 2018; Monday, March 26, 2018; Monday, May 7, 2018
FRF - Faculty Research Fund - $2,000 to $6,000
Eligibility: Tenure-stream faculty members and full-time Professors of the Practice in Arts, Sciences and Engineering.
This award type is limited to a research project with associated costs that range between $2,000 and $6,000.
Deadlines: Monday, September 25, 2017 and Monday, January 29, 2018
SSL - Senior Semester Leave – FT  Tenured Faculty Members
Eligibility: Full-time tenured faculty members in Arts, Sciences and Engineering.
This award type provides tenured faculty members with a paid semester leave to engage in research on a major project and to prepare it for publication. This award may be combined with other sabbatical awards.
Deadline: Monday, October 23, 2017
MELLON
Eligibility in Engineering: Semester leave for tenure-track faculty members beyond the junior leave for which they are currently eligible
Eligibility in Arts and Sciences: Up to $5,000 funding for tenure-track faculty members while on junior leave
Deadline for both: Monday, November 6, 2017
SUMMER - Summer Fellowships of $8,000 for Arts Sciences and Engineering full-time Tenure-Stream Faculty Members
Eligibility: Tenure-stream faculty members in Arts, Sciences and Engineering.
This award type is awarded in the full amount into the tenure-stream faculty member's research account, to those tenure-stream faculty members who are not receiving other salary support for summer research
Deadline: Monday, November 6, 2017

The DISTINGUISHED SENIOR SCHOLAR AWARD rotates among the following groupings of departments: 1) Arts and Humanities, 2) Social Sciences, 3) Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and 4) Engineering. In 2017-2018, departments in Arts and Humanities are eligible to nominate a senior faculty member for this award. Nomination information will be sent to these departments in December 2017, and nominations are due Monday, February 26, 2018.
Eligibility: Senior faculty members in rotating department group.
