Scholarship & Research: My research group studies the kinetics of phase transformations, and the resultant crystal and amorphous phase structure, in polymers and biopolymers. We use a variety of experimental approaches to study structures that form on different size scales, including: infrared spectroscopy (nano-scale); time resolved wide and small angle synchrotron X-ray scattering (nano-scale to molecular scale); optical ellipsometry (meso-scale), and finally dielectrical and thermal properties (bulk scale). We are especially interested in the effects of confinement on molecular mobility of thin and ultra-thin polymer films.
