Bylaws:

A Curriculum Committee, which shall care for the wise adjustment of the several curricula. All changes in these curricula shall be referred to this Committee for study and recommendation before being referred to the Faculty for final action. The Committee shall include one member from each department of the School, one representative from the Tufts Gordon Institute, one each from the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, and one from the humanities or the social studies.

Description and Workload

The School of Engineering Curriculum Committee (SOECC) is charged with maintaining the health and wellbeing of the curricula offered by the School of Engineering (SOE). In practice, this entails insuring that the Bulletin of Tufts University (the Bulletin) contains accurate, definitive, unambiguous, and concise information on all engineering courses and programs. SOE programs and courses arise from the initiative of the faculty of the school, while the SOECC chair speaks for the School of Engineering in communicating approved changes to the registrar for recording in the Bulletin. Thus the SOECC acts as a gatekeeper between the faculty of engineering and the registrar.

Proxy Policy:

It is extremely important that every Engineering department be represented at each committee meeting, whether by the appointed departmental representative or a proxy. In the event that an appointed representative cannot attend a committee meeting, the representative is encouraged to recruit another department member to attend as a temporary department representative. In that case, please inform the committee chair of the proxy choice. Proxy representatives have voting responsibilities.

Open Attendance Policy:

Unless otherwise noted, committee meetings are open to all voting faculty in Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, although only committee members can vote. Faculty responsible for specific changes requests are especially encouraged to attend the meeting at which their request is considered.

Submissions to the Curriculum Committee

The SOECC acts on requests to do the following.

  • Create or modify an undergraduate or graduate course (number, title, description) to be listed in the Bulletin.
  • Create or modify an undergraduate program (title, description), or SOE undergraduate programs as a whole, that will appear in the Bulletin.
The Engineering Graduate Committee fields requests to modify graduate engineering programs.

Forms and Documentation

The following is a downloadable form for submitting requests to the Curriculum Committee and, for convenience, the form for cross-listing a course, which should be routed to the assistant registrar. Refer to the guidelines above regarding procedures, approvals, and other protocols for submitting a request.
