Research

Overview

The department's signature emphasis on RPI (research-practice integration) is reflected in its commitment to developmental science, in the applied research of its faculty, in the grantsmanship and productivity of its research centers, institutes, and special programs, and in its community-based partnerships through which collaborative research and applied projects are implemented.

Research questions cover a range of issues central to the care of children and youth, such as, "What are best practices for supporting teen mothers?", "How can we harness technology to support children struggling to read?", "How can we bring the Internet and social media to support chronically ill children and adolescents?", "What are effective ways to build culturally-inclusive early childhood curriculum and professional development supports for teachers?”, and "What are best practices for supporting families with adopted children with special needs?" These are but a few of the questions being asked and explored. To learn more about research sponsored by the department, consult faculty profiles.

Faculty in the department conduct research across socio-culturally diverse communities on issues relevant for addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). For more information on faculty and student DEI work, view individual faculty and lab pages by visiting Centers and Institutes or see specific projects by visiting the Special Projects page.
