Students win awards for poetry, fiction writing
The English Department recognized four Tufts
students for their outstanding work in
poetry and fiction writing. Senior Lucy
Gaines, an English major, won the
first-place
Academy of American Poets Poetry Prize
for her submission, "The Taste of Pennies."
Freshman Jesse Welch was awarded second
place for his work, "Home." The Academy of
American Poets Poetry Prize program
recognizes collegiate poets through writing
prizes and awards nationwide. This year’s
Tufts contest was judged by Professor Robin
Behn, the director of the University of
Alabama’s creative writing program. In
fiction writing, junior English major Erik
Doughty received the first-place
Morse Hamilton Fiction Prize for his
work, "Then They Were Gone." The
second-place award went to senior Jenna
Nissan, also an English major, for her work,
"Pink Lady." Named after former Tufts
English Professor Morse Hamilton, the Morse
Hamilton Fiction Prize recognizes one or
more Tufts students each year who show
excellence in creative writing. This year’s
contest was judged by English Professor
Emeritus Alan Lebowitz.
