Graduate Program

Teaching

In addition to receiving a full fellowship in the first year and a semester-length dissertation fellowship at the end of their careers, all graduate students are guaranteed six semesters of teaching in the Tufts First-Year Writing Program (FYWP). Before teaching in this program, students entering with a BA receive an additional two semesters of mentoring and support as Teaching Assistants; they assist fulltime faculty member in literature courses and are introduced to the FYWP.

Graduate student instructors in the FYWP have full responsibility for course design and implementation, enabling them to gain experience that is extremely valuable on the job market. They teach one small course a semester. These courses are usually capped at ten students, allowing them to be intimate, discussion-oriented, and workshop-based. A graduate student who moves very quickly and successfully through the program may apply to replace both the final year of teaching and the semester-length fellowship with a full year’s dissertation fellowship.
