Teaching Placements/Career
Opportunities
Since 1992, graduates of the Tufts Ph.D.
program in English have secured teaching jobs
at a rate that well exceeds the national average
for the field. The following institutions have
appointed Tufts graduates to tenure-track or
full-time positions: Alabama State University,
Allegheny College, Bates College, Bentley College,
Boston College, Bowling Green State University,
Bridgewater State College, Buena Vista University,
California State University at Fresno, Columbus
State University, DePaul University, Earlham
College, Emmanuel College, Evergreen State College,
Frances Marion University, Hamilton College,
Hood College, Indiana University, Ithaca College,
Kalamazoo College, Kenyon College, Landmark
College, Manhattan College, Nazareth College,
Plymouth State College, Rollins College, Southern
Illinois University (Irish and Irish Immigration
Studies Center), St. Xavier University, State
University of New York at Oswego, University
of Colorado at Boulder, University of Texas
Pan-American, University of Utah, University
of Vermont, Utah State University, Villanova
University, Webster University, and Wheelock
College. In addition, one graduate received
a 3-year teaching Fellowship in the Humanities
Program at Stanford, and another was granted
a five-year appointment in the Expository
Writing Program
at Harvard University.
When applying to graduate programs in English,
applicants should be aware of the very difficult
job situation at present. The Modern Language
Association and other professional organizations
have noted that the teaching market for English
and other humanities fields has been highly
competitive in recent years.
