Graduate Lecturers
All Ph.D. students in English are guaranteed
eight semesters of teaching, one course per
semester. Typically, Graduate Lecturers teach
a sequence of courses associated with the First-Year
Writing Program. (There are also English as
a Second Language sections available for graduate
students who wish to gain experience in this
field.) Unlike teaching assistantships at many
other institutions, Graduate Lecturers at Tufts
have full responsibility for course design and
implementation. Such experience can be an extremely
valuable credential for a teaching career. Although
Graduate Lecturers have considerable autonomy
in developing the approach and content of their
courses, early teacher training is a vital part
of the Tufts program. Faculty mentors work closely
with Graduate Lecturers on such matters as shaping
the syllabus, selecting texts, establishing
grading policies, and dealing with other classroom
issues.
