Graduate
Programs: Master of Arts in Teaching - Art Education
The
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Art Education program
is offered through an affiliation between Tufts
University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston. The MAT in Art Education is a 12-month program
that cultivates the identities and practices of the
Artist/Researcher/Teacher in our multicultural society.
Overview of Art Education Program
The program is intended for artists who want to teach art to children and
adolescents in grades PK-12. The full program
requirements include course work in education, visual art
education, studio art, and student teaching internships as
pre-practicum and full practicum experiences.
The MAT in Art Education program is designed for students to
take advantage of the resources from various learning
communities, with Education courses offered at Tufts, while Studio Art
and Art Education courses are offered at the School of the Museum of
Fine Arts, Boston. The Student-Teaching-Internships in the public
schools and pre-practicum field work is at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston. Three distinct institutions of education integrate your
studies across three semesters by braiding these experiences
together:
- The Summer at Tufts University in the Department of
Education.
- The Fall at the SMFA in studio courses and Art Education
course work.
- The Spring in the public school with SMFA Art Education
course work in the evening.
Traditionally, MAT Art Education students enroll in
three
courses during the summer at Tufts immediately following spring
admission into the program. The remainder of the coursework is
taught in the fall and spring semesters at the School of the
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The typical path of study is listed
in the course requirements.
Teaching License
The program culminates in application for initial
teacher licensure of Visual Art from Massachusetts
Department of Education (for either grades PK-8 or
grades 5-12). Passing the
Massachusetts
Tests for Educator Licensure is a requirement to
gain a teaching license. After attainment of initial teacher
licensure and a master's degree, a candidate may be
employed as a full-time teacher of visual art and within
that position work toward the state requirements for
professional licensure.
Application, Portfolio and Financial Aid
To apply to the MAT in Art Education program, be certain to
include the
portfolio requirement with your application
to the Tufts University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. If
you are applying for financial aid, please include the Tufts
Graduate Studies Financial Aid form with the application to be
considered for department-based tuition reductions. To apply for
loans and other financial aid, you will also need to complete a
FAFSA.
