Graduate Program: Master of Arts in Teaching - Art Education
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Art Education program is
offered by Tufts University with the School
of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The MAT in Art Education is a
12-month program that cultivates the identities and practices of the
Artist/Researcher/Teacher in our multicultural society. The Tufts-SMFA Art Ed
program focuses on art making as a human right in a democratic society and
considers the art teacher’s role in fulfilling that ideal. We examine art making
and culture making in sociopolitical contexts with the goal of making art
education accessible and sustainable for all students, especially for students
in under-resourced and under-served communities. Read more in our
program
objectives.
Overview of Art Education Program
The program is intended for graduate students who want to attain a Massachusetts
teaching license, and is aimed at artists who want to teach art to children and
adolescents in grades PK-12. The full program requirements include course work
in education, visual art education, studio art, and student teaching internships
as pre-practicum and full practicum experiences. The MAT in Art Education
program is designed for students to take advantage of the resources from various
learning communities, with Education courses offered at Tufts, while Studio Art
and Art Education courses are offered at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston. The Student Teaching is experienced through partnerships in the
PK-12 schools,
and
pre-practicum
field work is at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Three distinct institutions of education integrate your studies across three
semesters by braiding these experiences together:
- The Summer at Tufts University in the Tufts Department of
Education.
- The Fall at the SMFA in studio courses and Art Education course
work.
- The Spring in the public school with SMFA Art Education course
work in the evening.
Traditionally, MAT Art Education students enroll in three courses during
the summer at Tufts immediately following spring admission into the program. The
remainder of the coursework is taught in the fall and spring semesters at the
School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The typical path of study is listed
in the course requirements.
Art Education Faculty
Every faculty member of the Art Education
program has been, or still is, a public school art
teacher and/or museum art educator. Therefore, each faculty member brings
hands-on, real world experience to our classroom seminars, as well as cutting
edge theories and research in the field of art education. Our program is active
in the state and national professional organization of National Art Education
Association, and the faculty
have been recognized with various awards.
We bring a constellation of experiences, insights, curiosities and passions to
our teaching.
Teaching License
The program culminates in application for initial teacher licensure of Visual Art
from Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (for either
grades PK-8 or grades 5-12). Passing the
Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure
is a requirement to gain a teaching license. After gaining the initial teacher
licensure and a master's degree, a candidate may be employed as a full-time
teacher of visual art and within that position work toward the state
requirements for professional licensure. The MTEL is administered by The
Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Education. For more information

Matriculating from BFA Program to MAT Program in Art Education
Are you an
undergraduate who wants to be an art teacher? We offer an opportunity in our Art
Education Teacher Licensure program called the BFA-Plus-MAT. It is for BFA
students of Tufts/SMFA who want to become art teachers. You have the option to
pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Art Education through the TuftsPlus
application privilege. After graduating with your BFA, the MAT takes only
an additional 12 months to complete. It is part of the broader initiative of
Tufts University called
"TuftsPlus."
The BFA-Plus-MAT in Art Education Application Privilege through TuftsPlus is open to
qualified students who earn their BFA through the Tufts University/SMFA joint
degree program and attain a GPA of at least 3.25, and matriculate directly from
the BFA Program into the MAT in Art Education Program. Letters of recommendation
and portfolio must qualify as well. Tufts/SMFA undergraduates may apply early,
after completing their junior year.
