Course Descriptions Art Education Courses at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts
EDS 173 Student Teaching in Art, PreK-8
The course is designed to support student art teachers in
their practicum full-time internship in a school art classroom
for grades PreK-8. Emphasis is placed on developing the
artist/researcher/teacher identity with a critical view on the
role of art education in visual culture and multicultural
education. The role of teaching philosophy, social justice
issues, student voice and activism, public school culture, and
curriculum development are studied. Strategies and organization
for meeting state requirements to achieve teacher licensure are
offered through the standards presented in the Massachusetts
Department of Education’s Pre-service Performance Assessment.
Professional practices and career launching strategies are
explored. Lifelong learning as a community leader in art
education is modeled through an exhibit and gallery talk at the
culminating event, the Art Education Festival. Open only to MAT
Art Ed students who are engaged in full-time student teaching

EDS 175 Art Education Foundation, PreK-8
In this course students investigate how the histories of the
field of PK-8 Art Education and the evolutions of cultural
production influence philosophies, current theories and
practices. These are explored through a sociocultural lens in
four areas: 1) the postmodern framework on knowledge and
learning, 2) voices of teachers, students and families, 3)
future directions of the field of Art Education and 4)
relationships between theory and practice. The dynamic interplay
of these four influences on Art Education are understood through
reading, discussing, community-working, art making, presenting,
reflecting and developing philosophies. Sociopolitical issues of
educational reform, globalization, diverse learners’ needs and
the effects of national and state achievement standards on art
programs are integrated throughout the course. Course
requirements include weekly readings and class discussions,
facilitating Family Arts Night in a BPS School, a research
presentation, a personal philosophy of Art Education expressed
in written and artistic forms. Open only to MAT Art ED students

EDS 176 Art Education Curriculum, PreK-8
This course focuses on curriculum development for elementary and
middle school art programs. Emphasis is placed on lesson and
unit plan writing, curriculum design, and critical study of
existing art curricula. Discussion topics include: curriculum
development for diverse student populations, integration of art
with other subjects, the application of national and state
standards to curriculum, evaluation criteria and procedures, and
studies of contemporary art and visual culture in art curricula.
Instructional methods, assessment strategies, art media, and
technologies will be explored through student projects and
presentations. Open only to MAT Art ED students with some

EDS 178 Art Education Curriculum, 5-12
This course will guide students in formulating a standards-based
curriculum for a yearlong high school or middle school course.
Methods and examples will be reviewed, evaluated and discussed
so students can compose their own goals, objectives, units and
lessons that reflect the National Standards and the
Massachusetts Frameworks. This course strives to help students
understand the definition, purpose, and variety of different
curricula and the role of curriculum in the art classroom. The
course fosters the development of sequential units, guided by
enduring understandings and essential questions. Lessons will
reflect the knowledge and practice of differentiated instruction
and reflect a strong academic tradition and sensitivity to the
developmental growth and personal uniqueness of all learners.
Multicultural education and postmodernism will be included in
curriculum perspectives. Written reflections and presentations
on curriculum ideas, and assessment revolving around the facets
of understanding are important components of the course. Guest
speakers will include former students who will share their
teaching experiences as well as an evaluator for the Advanced
Placement program who will discuss the requirements and
assessment rubrics of the AP program. Open only to MAT Art ED

EDS 179 Field Studies in Art Education, PreK-8
Students participate in school and community art programs for
children in preschool through grade eight. Fieldwork includes
internships at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and focused
observations one day a week in public school settings. Emphasis
is placed on reflection and discussion of lesson planning and
presentation, assessment strategies, classroom management,
children’s artistic development, and student diversity. Course
work includes individual field site visits, observation papers,
readings, reflection papers, research, and presentations. Open
only to MAT Art ED students, limited exceptions are made with

EDS 121 (formerly EDS 191) Art Education and Human Development with Multicultural Perspectives
This course is aimed toward undergraduate students who are
considering art teaching as a career path. The course considers
human development from early childhood through adolescence and
its relevance in creating a cohesive and appropriate art
curriculum. It also puts strong emphasis on multicultural
education and its importance as a tool for the art educator to
gain a deeper understanding and empathy towards all students.
Readings, seminar activities and field visits to PK-12
classrooms will focus on the role of art in human development
and learning. Special attention is paid to how art teachers
engage youth in studying, critiquing and making visual art while
considering multicultural education theory and the role of
contemporary artists in learning. Introductions to curriculum
development, seminar reflections and classroom discourse are
cultivated to respond to student observations about the human
development of learners in diverse settings. Open to all BFA
students with priority registration given to BFA students who
intend to apply to the MAT program. Furst
EDS 122 (formerly EDS 192) Art Education with Special Populations
This course is aimed toward undergraduate students who are
considering art teaching as a career path. This course considers
the role of the art educator with regard to visual culture and
art making with special populations. Attention focuses on
learners with special needs. Exceptionalities in learning
and expressing are explored through current research in
psychology, sociology and anthropology. Field observations to
sites that care for and educate special populations and that
offer art education will inform reflective discussion and
curriculum development. Solving issues of lesson adaptations to
make art available to all will be explored. A broad view of
ability/disability will inform the art educator’s role in asking
questions such as: What counts as art? Who counts as artist? and
What counts as knowledge? Open to all BFA students with priority
registration given to BFA students who intend to apply to the
