Counseling Services
The Tufts Counseling Center is located at 120 Curtis Street. All graduate students
are eligible to be seen at the Tufts Counseling Center at any point during their
graduate school careers and afterwards as alumni. This eligibility is for brief
counseling, initial assessment, and assistance in referral. In addition, the Counseling
Center offers some longer-term work, on a discretionary basis, to full-time graduate
students. In instances where longer-term work is indicated, graduate students may be
referred out when there are alternative financial resources or clinical reasons to
merit such a referral. The eligibility for graduate students for this kind of service
is generally limited to the first two years of a Master's level program. Individuals
seen at the Counseling Center are seen at no charge, and do not require any insurance.
Telephone ext. 7-3360 for information or an appointment.
Cousens Gymnasium
The Cousens Gym, located beyond the railroad bridge on College Avenue, is the primary
recreational gym on campus. With a current clearance sticker from the bursar on your
I.D. card, you can use the pool, basketball courts, running track, weights, squash
courts, and other facilities when they are not being used for team practices (which
can be often, when they are in season). There is also an outdoor track on the main
campus, as well as two sets of outdoor tennis courts. For a complete list of recreational
facilities, consult the Tufts Student Handbook, the "Pachyderm" (the University
mascot). You can get one from the Graduate School office.
Experimental College
The Experimental College is a center at Tufts that offers a selected range of courses
intended to broaden and enrich the traditional curriculum for undergraduate education.
Graduate students who are interested in teaching may submit proposals for courses to
the Experimental College Program. Course proposals are reviewed by University faculty
and the Experimental College staff.
Graduate students may not take courses through the Experimental College for credit.
However, the Experimental College does offer non-credited colloquia, conferences, and
workshops related to educational concerns of the University community. For more information
call the Experimental College Office in Miner Hall at 617-627-3384.
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is the academic and administrative unit
responsible for all phases of post-baccalaureate education of the
School of Arts and Sciences. Applications for
admission, petitions for leave, continuation and transfers of credit, and filing for
degree applications are all handled through the Graduate and Professional Studies
Office. Lynne Pepall is the
Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Gretchen Inman is the Administrative Manager. For additional information, call the
Graduate School at 617-627-3395.
Health Services/Vaccinations
The Health Service Office is located 124 Professors Row. The medical staff consists of
physicians, psychiatrists, specialty consultants, nurse practitioners, nurses, nurses'
aides and laboratory technologists. During the academic year students are seen by
appointment or on a walk-in-basis. Tufts University policy requires that each student
have medical coverage under an accident/sickness insurance plan with benefits
comparable to the Tufts' plan. The University offers a comprehensive plan at a
reasonable cost to students. If students are covered under their parents' or
other private insurance plan and they do not want the Tufts' plan, it may be waived
only by submitting a properly completed waiver form to the Health Service Office
prior to the waiver cutoff date.
The specific date, noted in the Health Service information packet
mailed to each student, occurs before matriculation. The Health
Service fee is a mandatory and non-waivable cost. Please consult
the Tufts University Bulletin for further information for health
service information and fees.
Due to State regulations, Tufts University requires strict
compliance with vaccination regulations for all students.
You will have to show proof of vaccination for several diseases
through immunization histories or an official letter from your
doctor. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to continue in the
program.
Information Technology Services
The ITS Computing Center at Eaton Hall has recently been renovated to increase
the number of workstations in the lab from 75 to 160 Dell Pentium III PCs and
new G3 iMacs. Also available are ten new multimedia workstations, two PC scanners,
one Macintosh scanner, and centralized printing from all applications including
the Internet.
The Mugar Computer Lab located at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy is
a graduate student only lab that contains twenty-six PCs, two Macintosh computers,
and a digital scanner. Two additional classroom labs located in Jackson
and Tisch are available for faculty instruction and ITS training. Lab hours are
posted in the labs and on the web. Information about requesting software and
reserving labs for classroom use can be found on the web.
Email accounts are
automatically assigned for all registered students. This method of communication
is preferred within the Department of Education. In order to obtain your user ID and
password, students must attend either the Graduate School orientation or stop in
at the Arena Computer Annex (behind Pearson Annex) during business hours (M-F
9:00-5:00 pm). Your account will remain active as long as you are a registered
student.
Parking
Parking at Tufts is limited. Students are encouraged to use
public transportation whenever possible. Any vehicle parking on
campus must be registered with the Traffic Office. Parking
stickers can be purchased from the Traffic Office at 419 Boston Avenue (Dowling
Hall). Permits are available 24 hrs a day. Applicants should bring their current Tufts ID, driver's
license, and vehicle registration. Students whose vehicles are
registered out of state must obtain a Massachusetts Nonresident
Student Decal, presenting proof of insurance at the time of
application. Vehicles parked in violation of Tufts' parking
regulations are subject to being ticketed. Fines that remain
unpaid after ten days will be billed to the student's bursar
account. Traffic fines must be cleared before transcripts will be
released. Students are also welcome to park in the Parking Garage
at 419 Boston Avenue, Monday to Friday, 6:30 am to 12:00 am.

Student Identification Cards
Graduate Student I.D.'s are available, without charge, from the Security Office at 419
Boston Avenue, with a clearance sticker from the
Bursar's Office.

for the use of University facilities, such as the libraries and gym.
Summer School
This office offers courses during two six-week sessions and one twelve-week session
each summer. The list of summer course offerings, available each spring, can be
helpful in planning a year round academic program. The summer school calendar for
the upcoming year can be found on the website.
Registration for Summer Courses
All graduate students should register for Summer School courses at the Graduate School,
which verifies acceptability of summer courses toward degree requirements. All graduate
students should submit their registration fee and form, signed by the department's
advisor, to the Graduate School. For more information on summer school activities or
to obtain registration forms, call the Summer
School Office at 108 Packard Avenue at 617-627-3454.
Tisch Library/Consortium Libraries
The Tisch Library - the arts and sciences library - is an excellent campus resource.
While the library provides a late night study room, it does not stay open all night.
Call 617-627-3347 for hours of operation. The library offers a growing reference
collection of both print and electronic resources, as well as a full range of services,
including photocopiers, document delivery, lockers, and much more. If you are having
trouble with your library research, please call the Reference Desk at 617-627-3460 to
schedule an appointment with a reference librarian. Many courses require you to use
reserve materials which are held at the Circulation/Reserve Desk in the library lobby.
A tour of the library system for new students is arranged by the Department of Education
during fall orientation.
Students and faculty also have access to the 16 academic and research libraries belonging
to the Boston Library Consortium, and through Document Delivery to library collections
throughout the country and abroad. Please refer to the Tufts University Bulletin for a
complete description of library facilities and collections.
