Mike DeBartolo won the prestigious Taussig Award of the Omicron Epsilon Society for his 2006 senior honors thesis on "The Economics of Faith-based Organizations: Does Religious Pluralism Play a Role in Fostering Civic Engagement?". Mike's article will be published in The American Economist.

Enrico Spolaore's research on the diffusion of development featured in David Warsh's Economic Principals.

Eric Hansford is working with Professor Gilbert Metcalf researching the political economy of gasoline taxation.

Arlen Spiro is working with Professor Anna Hardman researching the evolution of density and density gradients.

Rajeev Dehejia presented his research on "The Consequences of Child Labor: Evidence from Longitudinal Data in Rural Tanzania" at the Applied Seminar, Department of Economics, Hebrew University, in Jerusalem, Israel on May 8.

Yannis Ioannides presented a paper on "Information and Communication Technologies and Cities" for the Economics Department Seminar at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri on April 16th.

Gilbert Metcalf presented a paper analyzing proposed carbon cap and trade schemes in the United States at the Forum on "Global Climate Strategies Beyond 2012: The Route Ahead" in Madrid, Spain in April. The conference was put on by the European University Institute under the auspices of the European Commission, the Council of European Energy Regulators and the Spanish Ministry of Environment.

Enrico Spolaore presented his research on The Diffusion of Development at the Santa Fe Institute's Workshop on "The Co-evolution of Behaviors and Institutions" (Santa Fe, New Mexico) and at the NBER "Evolution of the Global Economy" Meeting on March 2, and gave the inaugural lecture on "The Size of Nations" at an international conference in Barcelona, Spain on March 8.

David Dapice gave the lead paper at the first meeting of the Cambodian Economic Forum, opened by Prime Minister Hun Sen, and presented an invited paper at the 20th anniversary of "Doi Moi" (economic reform) in Hanoi, Vietnam

Prof. David Garman has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Lillian and Joseph Leibner Award for Excellence in Teaching and Advising of Students. This award is presented annually to a member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences who is recommended by both Faculty colleagues and students for the outstanding instruction and guidance of Tufts University students. This year is the first time an Economics Faculty member has been bestowed this honor. The Award will be presented to David Garman at the Arts, Sciences and Engineering Meeting on May 16th.

Prof. Jay Shimshack has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Undergraduate Initiative in Teaching (UNITE) Award. The award recognizes those junior (tenure track) members of the Faculty of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising, concern for students’ academic and personal growth, and the ability to convey a passion and enthusiasm for their field of study. The UNITE Award will be presented to Jay Shimshack at the final Faculty Meeting on May 16th.

Prof. Gilbert Metcalf was interviewed on the TV show NECN NewsNight on the topic of climate change legislation. View the news segment. He was also cited in "US House takes on Big Oil," published by the Christian Science Monitor. Read the research paper.

Prof. Gilbert Metcalf's Op-Ed piece, "Which plan on climate change?" was published in the Boston Globe.
